FITCHBURG -- A Fitchburg man charged with assaulting and robbing an elderly woman outside the Market Basket on John Fitch Highway is being held on $5,000 cash bail.
Matthew Reaves, 45, with a last known address of 18 Leighton St., is charged with assault and battery, assault and battery on a person over the age of 60, larceny from a person over the age of 65, and unarmed robbery of a person over 60, according to court records.
Fitchburg Police Officer Michael Rochette reported that the elderly woman was loading groceries into her car on Jan.19 when a man came up and took her purse.
"The suspect grabbed a hold of her purse and forced her onto the ground, tearing the pocketbook from the strap in the process," Rochette wrote in an affidavit filed in Fitchburg District Court on Jan. 23.
The woman was not seriously injured, according to police.
Reaves appeared in Fitchburg District Court Friday after being arrested on a warrant earlier this month, according to court documents.
Video surveillance showed Reaves entering the store about five minutes before the robbery, Rochette wrote. Reaves is seen hanging around the entrance to the store before following the victim out, according to Rochette.
The victim said the assailant got into a car after robbing her and drove off, according to Rochette's affidavit.
Police said they found the car parked on Myrtle Avenue shortly after responding to the robbery. Police towed the car and contacted Reaves' wife, who is the registered owner, according to another affidavit filed by Fitchburg police officer Robert Raboin.
The suspect's wife told police she often lets Reaves borrow her car and let him have the car on the day of the robbery. "(Reaves) told (her) that he needed to run some errands that day," Raboin wrote.
