BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Bolingbrook police shot and critically wounded a 45-year-old man who fired at them with a shotgun after a two-hour standoff at his home early Monday, authorities said. No officers were hurt.
The incident began late Sunday night after police on the scene of a separate incident were approached by the father of the wounded man. He said his son had shot at him and ordered him to get out of their home in the 300 block of Drake Avenue, said Bolingbrook police Lt. Ken Teppel.
When officers arrived at the home, they tried unsuccessfully to contact the son via telephone, bullhorn and the squad-car public address system. After two hours, police broke a window to try to talk with him, Teppel said, but he fired two rounds at officers from that window.
He then confronted an officer at a second broken window, Teppel said. The officer ordered him to drop his shotgun, but the man instead raised it in the direction of the officer, who shot him, Teppel said.
The man was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was listed in critical condition, a spokeswoman said. She could not provide more details.
Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting, said state police Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez. The Bolingbrook officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave with pay. The wounded man had not been charged in the standoff as of Monday, Teppel said.
The man had a revoked Illinois State Police firearm owner's identification card, and was arrested by Itasca police in 2006 for unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault, Teppel said.
