HOUSTON --
Monday was a somber day for the Houston area's law enforcement community -- two funerals were held for deputies killed in the line of duty.
More than 1,600 people attended both services.
The first service was held Monday for morning for a Harris County deputy constable who died weeks after a handcuffed suspect shot him.
Harris County Precinct 6 Cpl. Harry Thielepape died at Memorial Hermann Hospital on Wednesday.
Colleagues, family and friends poured into the Catholic Charismatic Center on Cullen Street to remember a man who did whatever he could to keep people safe.
"He was a hard worker, very energetic, kind man," Deputy Joseph Guerra said. "He brought a lot of enthusiasm to our precinct and motivated a lot of the troops into taking the crime and dealing with it so our community could be a lot safer."
Investigators said Thielepape was shot after he stopped Jesus Reyna at a north Harris County apartment complex on Jan. 26. Theielepape found drugs and a gun inside Reyna's car and placed him in an unmarked squad car, officials said.
Detectives said Reyna managed to get his handcuffs in the front of his body. Thielepape and Reyna got into a struggle when Theielepape opened the back door, officials said. Reyna got hold of one of Thielepape's two guns, investigators said, and Reyna shot Thielepape several times.
Investigators said Thielepape returned fire, killing Reyna.
"Short guy, but a big heart," Constable Victor Trevino said. "We're just proud of him and what he did for our department. I want this to be a celebration of his life and what he did for our community. Just think about the good times as a friendly officer with great humor and (he) brought a lot of sense of humor to our department."
Thielepape worked with KPRC Local 2's "Wheel of Justice" team several times. He was a 12-year veteran of the Constable's Office and was assigned to a special unit focused on finding fugitives and parole violators.
Thielepape was survived by his wife and three children.
The second service was held Wednesday afternoon at Second Baptist Church in Katy.
Harris County sheriff's Deputy Craig Miller, 43, died when his undercover unit collided with a truck in west Houston on Thursday.
Jose Vieyra, 56, was charged with criminally negligent homicide after he crossed all three lanes of the Katy Freeway eastbound feeder road near Mason Road and hit the deputy's unmarked sport utility vehicle shortly before 8 p.m., officials said.
Miller was remembered as a family man -- a loving husband with two children.
Miller's son, Avery, spoke at his father's service.
"Awesome dad. We did everything together. He had the answer to everything," Avery Miller said.
Craig Miller was described as an outstanding deputy of 20 years who had a great sense of humor. He also played in a band and knew how to have fun, friends said.
His wife, Michelle, said she and her children are now relying on their close family.
"We will get through this the Miller way -- through our family, our friends and our faith," she said.
Miller worked for the investigative support services division. He was returning from an investigative operation in the Copperfield area when he was killed, officials said.
A common theme for both funerals was that all of Houston was protected and made safer because of the job these two men did.
