BROCKTON —
Seven state police cruisers lined up on Main Street on Sunday amid a weekend of heightened patrols in the city.
“Anywhere I’ve driven, I’ve seen them stopping people — in the morning, at night; from sunshine to dark,” said Ward 3 Councilor Dennis Eaniri.
Dubbed “Operation Brockton,” state police patrols are augmenting the local Police Department after four people were shot, two fatally, in five days.
City councilors say the additional patrols and assistance from federal law enforcement agencies are welcome as they try to calm the anxieties of residents.
“If there is legal cause to stop cars, I’m all for it,” said Ward 6 Councilor Michelle DuBois.
But, police said Sunday that motorists have called to complain of the increased stops that may take up to 40 minutes or more as personal and motor vehicle information is verified via computer and, in cases, motor vehicles are searched.
DuBois said they should have no complaints because this is one way of trying to get illegal guns off city streets.
The increased patrols are expected to continue as local, state and federal authorities try to solve the shootings.
“We’ve got to do something,” added Eaniri, who said Brockton may benefit from the gun sweep that was launched in Boston earlier this month. That program has plainclothes police officers going door to door, asking parents to allow searches of young teens rooms for drugs and guns.
“I think it’s great,” added Eaniri. “Anything we can try right now, we should try. It might surprise some parents.”
On Sunday, Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Bridget Norton Middleton said there were no arrests in the shootings that took the life of a cabdriver from Bridgewater and a 15-year-old youth who recently moved from Brockton to Boston. The youth’s 19-year-old cousin was also shot. He survived.
While police believe they have motives for those shootings, attempted robbery of cabdriver Edward Conley and a past dispute in the case of the youths, they remain baffled by the shooting of John Connolly, 88, outside his Fairmount Avenue home on Wednesday afternoon.
Connolly is recovering from the gunshot that entered his back shoulder and exited his chest. He remains hospitalized, his daughter said this weekend.
On Monday, the City Council is expected to hear a request for security partitions in taxi cabs. Per the council’s rules, that request would be forwarded to the public safety committee for review.
“People are upset, worried and angry that something like this happened,” said DuBois, who heard concerns from several constituents in the days since the shooting. She said the elderly are especially shaken by the shootings.
“Something has to be done,” she added.
Anyone with information related to any of the shootings is asked to call Brockton police at 508-941-0234.

Complain about shootings, complain about proactive enforcement...

I guess being stopped and searched is much worse then getting shot. Oh well.

Tough schit to all of them. Don't want to get pulled over? Don't come to Brockton!

The stops wouldn't take 40min or more if they'd just pony up their REAL ID's.

Did they do racial profiling forms for all the complainant callers?
