Ipswich - A small electrical fire broke out in a home on Brownville Avenue last Tuesday morning. The residents were home at the time but no one was injured. But, damage to the building is estimated at $20,000. The fire, though small, caused a significant amount of damage, according to Fire Chief Arthur Howe. He said there was a lot of charring for such a minor fire. It's likely the fire had been smoldering for some time, Howe said. Moderate heat can smolder for anywhere from an hour to weeks or months before there is any sign of a problem. With the right humidity and air temperature mixed with fuel and oxygen, he said, the conditions can create a "perfect storm" for combustion. Usually, there is about a quarter-inch to a half-inch of char, but at 44 Brownville Avenue, Howe said, there was at least three-quarters of an inch. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze using hoses. Mutual aid for station coverage was provided by the Rowley Fire Department.
