Boston Resident requirement gets me every time
Posted by: underdod47
How many qualified applicants for these types of positionc does Boston lose because the would be applicant has a family and lives in Somerville, Quincy or heaven forbid New Hampshire. Because we all know nobody owns a car capable of driving to the Gated Emerald City of BOSTON

Any idea on the pay rate?

Residency is a sacrifice that every city employee conforms with like it or not. For the Police it is about 1/3 of your career. If you really want to work here move into Boston there are plenty of great neighborhoods. I had to move to Dorchester about 2.5 miles from my home in Quincy to be able to be a candidate in a department where residency should be the easiest part of your backround check. You are not the first or last that questions this rule, but it is what it is. Everytime I visit a friend from college outside the City I question my decision to take the chance of living here just for employment, but at the end of the day Boston will usually hire at least (2) big classes off an exam opposed to a town 15 -20 miles out that will hire a small handful if they are fortunate enough to get them into their budget. I really wanted this job so the percentages were a no brainer for me. In this instance if you are a Ranger for a couple years then transfer over to the Police it's all good city time just remeber that. Just my 2 cents.

I think it is in the $14-15/hr. range but they have OT and details. You also have to go through a 4 week "in-house" academy.

are these the DCR Rangers? Or is that a seperate department?
Posted by: masscopguy
They are seperate from the DCR (which now has an opening at the State House)
They are primarily on the Boston Common. The have cars horses and foot patrols.
There are year round Rangers who are on the Common 12 months a year.

they also have year round rangers in franklin park . I worked there 8 years ago. Good place to get your foot in the door. Last I heard they were still unarmed. but carry oc, cuffs, and batons. They also write parking tickets and can arrest. Im not sure about arrest powers for the seasonals. The supervisors are a good group and the chief ranger is a good guy. The residency is a big drawback.
