Are these probation jobs just as political as getting one with the state?

My experience says "no". I have gone for, and been approved for, several Fed jobs. I've never seen anything(yet) that looked like someone was using influence to get on the job. One way to find out....stop thinking about it and just apply for the damned job already.

Anyone know the starting pay?

Not political at all. The process was changed a few years ago to make sure favoritism is not involved. One of the ways this is done is b having candidates do an on the spot written essay. Then current fpo's read the essays not knowing who wrote them and choose the best one or two. The job pays about 45k to start but increases rapidly.
