Last weekend, went to a domestic out in the middle of nowhere. The female party was actually the primary physical aggressor, so I arrested her. Locked her in the car, and then locked my keys in the car...doh! I have spare keys to my cruiser, but that day I happened to be driving the barracks spare cruiser, because mine was at headquarters...

Don't feel so bad. I know of an officer who did that a few years ago; went from the town they worked to pick-up dinner in the neighboring town. Locked himself out of the cruiser as a couple of the neighboring towns officers were driving by. They offered their sympathy of course

I feel your pain bro. That same scenario happened to me on the first arrest I ever made!!!! I was working at a campus, and had to call the town PD to come and unlock my cruiser. Meanwhile, the drunk in the back was laughing his ass off! I wanted to just let him go I felt so stupid.

When I was in the Academy, my Class went to assist on a search in the woods for a murder weapon.
One of my platoon mates was sent on a mission to our Platoon DI's cruiser. The Trainee locked the keys in the DI's cruiser.
Needless to say, after the reaction he got, I have it burned in my head to always have a spare key on my duty belt and one hidden on the cruiser.

Best thing my Chief did was put one of those steering column switches in that disable the column. It has really cut down on our worries.
