My son is going as well, He has a Hp and is happy with it. Ive know idea how this works with deployment. I chat with buddies over there all the time, next time I'll ask how the units handle this stuff relative to securing/transporting high value personal items.
God Bless your son Blueleader and may he keep him safe...youve a right to be proud.

I brought a Toshiba over when I got deployed and the CPU shit the bed. I contacted Toshiba directly while I was there and made them aware of the problem........ When I got home to the States, they wouldnt help me out. All I wanted was a new one. They told me that my original purchase warranty was up. THANK GOD I bought an extended warranty from Best Buy. It took them forever but they got it working. I ended up giving it away to someone who had a "Big Kid Big Sister" thing in the city......... I have an IBM thinkpad now which I have had for a handful of years. I dont wanna jink myself but it is indestructable. Love it. Dell seems to be making some great ones too. They are reasonably priced these days too......... Good Luck to your kid. I wish him godspeed.

Most of the guys on my support group over in the sand box
are using HP or Compaq laptops, they have had problems with the cheap laptops.
Stick with a good name brand.

I salute both of the guys going over to the box and may they both
return safely.

If you want to spend the dough, you could get a Panasonic Toughbook. It's what most of use in our cruisers and I believe the military uses them too.

Panasonic Toughbooks are good but BIG dollars compared to a laptop with similar performance ($1700 to $3000). You are paying for the "toughness" which can be debateable with some models. You can get a Dell Inspiron 1525 with 1 gig of RAM for about $550.00 Thats my recommendation, but everyone has their preference.

That's a great choice. Especially for the conditions over there.

But at those prices, you could easily buy 4 or 5 laptops.

94c is right; a Toughbook will probably cost around $6k. I have the HP pavilion dv6000 series and I absolutely love it. It's fast, thin, lightweight, and the screen is awesome. I highly recommend it.

Yea, screw Toshiba. My friend had a Toshiba and he dropped it and the screen ended up with a slight crack. He sent it in to get fixed. When he got it back the screen was practically destroyed. Toshiba claimed that it wasn't their fault and therefore refused to fix it free of charge. So he just went out an bought another laptop.

Anyway, the new Toshiba's off the shelf seem to have a security feature needing the owner's fingerprint to operate or something like that. If my laptop gets stolen I want them to be able to use it, which is why I have a guest account set up. I have the lojack software installed which is only good if the computer is connected to the internet. Yea, if I have security so tight that they can't use it, lojack can't find it and in 30 days I'll be getting a new laptop...but I have too much information that I have stored that I would end up losing.

I have the HP dv5000 which was replaced by the dv6000 a couple years ago. It may look outdated, but I still have the brightview screen which is like HD quality. I've had overall good experiences with HP and also highly recommend them.

Based on my experiences with Dell, they suck. Save up the few extra hundred dollars and get a better quality laptop.

In my opinion, get an AMD processor if you can. Intel's suck up more energy and run hotter reducing longevity.

That looks like a very nice setup. I bet he'll find the built in mic and webcam very useful.
