HOUSTON, Texas — Three Houston police officers opened fire on a woman after she tried to run them over Wednesday night, an HPD spokesman said.
One bullet struck the woman in the elbow as she sped away and led officers on a chase through southeast Houston, said HPD spokesman John Cannon.
According to early reports, the incident started about 9 p.m. in the 2900 block of Renshaw after officers spotted the woman driving what they believed to be a stolen sport utility vehicle, Cannon said.
The woman initially stopped, but then she took off in the Mitsubishi Montero, driving toward the officers, he said.
That's when one or more officers opened fire, Cannon said.
It was unclear late Wednesday how many shots were fired, but at least one bullet struck the suspect.
Police said the woman kept driving for about a mile until the vehicle struck a curb and collided with one or two cars before coming to rest in the 6300 block of the Gulf Freeway between Griggs and S. Wayside.
The woman was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, still struggling with paramedics and officers.
No one else was seriously injured.
Officers closed a section of the northbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway and diverted traffic to feeder roads as investigators collected evidence late Wednesday.
The shooting is under investigation by HPD homicide detectives, HPD Internal Affairs, and the Harris County District Attorney's office.
The officers involved were J.R. Salinas, A. Arriaga, and F. Cardoza from the southeast patrol division.
