MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A Melbourne police officer and a good Samaritan are being called heroes on Monday after rescuing a man who was fishing with a net and fell off a pier into the water below. The 52-year-old man, who is in critical condition at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, was fishing off the Eau Gallie pier when he apparently slipped and plunged into the Indian River. "I heard a splash, and I went over and he was belly down and he was face down and he wasn't turning over. I think he hit his head. He had a huge gash on the side of his neck," Pete Martino said. "His wife came running over -- I assume it was his wife -- she was hysterical, obviously. He had a net there. The net he was fishing (with), I dropped it down and got it under his arms (and) pulled his head up so his head was out of the water." "His wife was struggling, so I just jumped in the water, and once I got my arms around him, knowing that I had seen the abrasions on his neck, I figured there was some type of head trauma," Officer Edward Ferguson said. Paramedics arrived and transported the man to the hospital. Ferguson downplayed his role in the incident. "I don't think I really did any life-saving skills except keep his head above water and keep him stable," Ferguson said.
