FRAMINGHAM - Two men had stolen GPS receivers out of cars Friday afternoon, and were looking for more on Sunday when they were caught, police said.
Roberto Rivera, 21, of Mattapan, and Rey Acevedo, 20, of Framingham, told police the global positioning system unit found in their car belonged to one of their girlfriends, but officers matched found it matched one reported stolen, Deputy Police Chief Craig Davis said.
Around 3 p.m. on Friday, two employees from Conigliario Industries, 701 Waverley St., called police after someone had broken into their vehicles and stole their GPS systems.
"Luckily, they had surveillance cameras, and they caught the (suspects') car on video," Davis said.
It appeared to be a silver Acura Integra from the mid to late 1990s with front-end damage.
Officers were told to keep an eye out for the vehicle, but it was the street crimes unit that found the car, on Sunday at 5:30 p.m., Davis said.
"They were on patrol at the Jefferson Hills apartments when they saw a car matching the description," the deputy said. "The car was driving very slowly and (the driver and passenger) appeared to be looking into cars."
The officers stopped the car and questioned Rivera, who was driving but did not have a license.
While the officers questioned the passenger, they saw a baggie of pot in the front seat and a GPS receiver in the back, Davis said.
Acevedo, of 554 Hollis St., and Rivera, of 1015 Morton St., were charged with breaking and entering into a vehicle, larceny over $250, malicious mischief causing more than $250 damage and possession of marijuana.
Rivera was also charged with driving without a license.
Both men pleaded not guilty in Framingham District Court yesterday and were released without bail. They are due back in court on March 18 for pretrial conferences.
