Cop, Bystander Use Fishing Net To Pull Couple From Indian River

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A Melbourne police officer and a bystander used a fishing net to help save a couple in the Indian River lagoon on Monday.

One victim was lying on the pier near the Eau Gallie Causeway to fill a bucket with water when he fell in. His wife jumped in after him, but started struggling herself.

A fisherman threw out his casting net to keep their heads above water, while a police officer jumped in to help.

"We were holding. We had them both up and she kept going under, coming up and then he just jumped right in. The guy was really, really unbelievable," eyewitness Peter Martino said of the officer.

The man was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center. Authorities have not released his identity. His wife told firefighters he has had seizures before, but authorities don't know if that's why he fell in.
