New Bedford - Police arrested a couple after they allegedly attacked a taxicab driver in a road rage incident Saturday.
Christopher Bates, 38, and Nina Walters, 48, were arrested by Officer Antonio Pereira about 5:15 p.m. in the downtown area.
Police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silva said the cabbie came upon the suspects’ vehicle stopped in the middle of a road and after waiting for it to move, sounded his horn.
“Walters then exited her car, approached the taxi driver and when he rolled down his window, thinking she may be asking for some type of assistance, she punched the taxi driver in the face,” Silva stated.
“As the taxi driver tried to leave, Bates got out of his car armed with a crowbar and threw it at the taxi as it was leaving.”
When Walters and Bates followed the taxi in their vehicle, the cabbie called police.
“Within minutes, several New Bedford police officers responded and encountered Walters and Bates who exhibited obvious signs of intoxication, were disorderly and refused to listen to the officers’ directions,” Silva said.
“When Walters was told she was under arrest, she resisted violently and kicked two police officers, as well as attempting to kick out a police cruiser’s window,” Silva said.
Walters is charged with assault and battery on the cab driver, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and two counts of assault and battery on a police officer.
Bates is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (crowbar), disturbing the peace and intimidating a witness (for allegedly threatening the cab driver).
Walters and Bates were brought to the Bristol County Ash Street Jail for detention.
The cabbie was not seriously injured.
