Hi people:

doesnt anyoe know, if you go through one of the sheriffs academy's ( middlesex, essex, etc) do you get any certifications once the traing is done like special police or anything similar. just curious.

thanks

I do not know about Essex, but I can say that when you graduate from Middlesex's 19 week academy you receive a certificate in NERPI.

What's NERPI ??

NERPI... A.K.A. Part-Time Police Academy. Allows you to work as either a Reserve or Special Police Officer. Basically a bare bones Police Academy

What would be the main difference between a 19 week sheriff academy and a 19 week police academy reference to curriculum??

I work for Middlesex and you graduate as a deputy sheriff. You come out of the academy with all the arrestable rights as a police officer except ch.90.You also can do details in the 54 cities and town in middlesex County (which is the 4th largest county in the country.) Just a little fun fact for you all. BTW You can not use this academy anywhere else. You would have to go through another academy for police officer.

Ahh forget it, it's not worth the headache.

Last I knew a Sheriff does not have the same arrest powers as a municipal officer. Unless something has changed that I'm not aware of.
Oh great here it goes again...

There are several locked topics on this board that deal with that.

I heard another PI academy is starting at Plymouth County this month. Has the MCJTC and Sheriffs made up or what?

Someone mentioned Essex, so I'll address that. Otherwise I'm leaving the "Power and Authority" stuff alone...

The Essex academy certifies you, for our departments standards, as a corrections officer. No police certification comes with it. You must attend NERPI or something similar on your own time at a later date, if you so desire.

Note: Not a representative of the department, and only answering from personal observations.

The M.C.J.T.C is going to be the M.P.T.C and I was told the certificate that you receive is not good if your trying to apply for a Boston Special in Boston. "There's a real kick in the butt".
