I just ordered half a dozen Stinger LED flashlights to replace a few of the regular Stingers we have. Does anyone use a LED stinger? If so are they really better then the regular bulbs? Thanks

haven't seen an LED light I liked yet (that wasn't mounted in the back deck of a CVPI) hahahahaha. actually, I am debating on trying a LioTec. Priced well enough that if I dont like it, I can deal with it being a nice back up light.

See there were so many better brands of LED lights out there, but just to change them for our Dept. is a mess. All new charger racks mounted to the walls, buying and issuing new holsters for their belts.. So stinger LED's we just about the best we could do.....

Posted by: Sniper

Oh. Taking all THAT into consideration, you probably made the right choice. I didn't look that far into your particular situation. Please keep us advised on how they work out Dodge.

I have a Stinger LED. I like it but, because it's an LED, its light doesn't reach out like a traditional bulb. Under typical conditions at night where its not pitch black I'm lucky to get a 30-40 yd. effective range on it. In pitch black darkness, its effective range obviously increases.

I was disappointed that it didn't fit the Uncle Mike's cordura holster for the regular stinger because its about an inch and a half longer than the regular stinger. Streamlight makes a cordura holster for the LED version, which I ended up getting. It's similar to the Uncle Mike's holster but its bulkier and it has an open bottom. As soon I find out Uncle Mike's has their own cordura holster for it and its not like Streamlight's, then I'm buying a new one.

I saw John at the hunting/fishing show at the DCU Center in Worcester yesterday. LEOs just seemed glued to his booth. I really like his lights. I actually am interested in getting the Sniper (6 series) LED flashlight (260 lumen Q5) sometime in the future. An Officer I was with bought the Hawk which is the Xenon (traditional bulb?) version very similar to the Sniper. That thing is bright. It's small (about an inch or so longer than the width of my palm) but you can just feel the heat from the beam on your skin. It's rated at 170 lumens, not sure how to compare that to candlepower. I'm curious to see how it holds up before I buy one.

Try the new LED that is used by LAPD, although the light is long it is pretty light weight. It also has a push button on the back and on the body. I like it, its has a higher output than most LED's. It lasts just as long, minute wise. Made by Pelican, a quality light made by a quality company. Check it out, Sniper and everyone.

Thanks MC........ LA Copper, you have any input on that ????

I think i's stinger that makes it, but they have a light that has both the LED and a traditional bulb all in one unit and is the same size as the traditional stinger

I'm thinking of picking one of these up;

The new LAPD light is the Pelican 7060.
http://www.pelicanproducts.us/detailaspx687.html

Designed so as not to be used as an impact weapon. When turned on, it gives hugs to the populace of L.A., sings to them, gives them some chamomile tea and cookies and automatically files a complaint against the officer using it for daring to stop you when you "weren't doing nothin!" It also shows those lit up in the best light..."He was turning his life around...23 and father of 4...one of his children's mother said he was going to school at night and hopes for a record deal soon..." Yet I digress.

It is rather large, the lamp assembly is almost the same size as the grip. reported to get pretty warm, but seems to be pretty bright.

The Streamlight Stinger LED has just come out in a dual switch model, the Stinger LED DS. One of our cruisers has one, but it is out of service b/c the switch got all f'd up and now won't work...at less than a year old. It is a nice light though, has a bright, medium and low setting, as well as a strobe setting, which works really well with the glow int he dark cone for traffic.

Anyone use the Liotec series of lights? If so, can we get a review, thinking of getting the 260 lumen model for the belt or to heat my coffee when the microwave is down.

Look into bright-strike as well. http://www.brite-strike.com/BlueDot.html

The description and some reviews read well, but BIG $$.

Enough rambling. Good night all. Careful driving in this crap.

I had Light reviews do a review of the
Defender Q5 260 lumens here is the link:

He has quite a database of light reviews on his site. Great info.

I use the Stinger LED and I only have good things to say.

I used to use a Surefire 8Ax incandecent.... but I was either always replacing blown bulbs or recharging the darn thing.

If you ask me the Stinger LED is plenty bright with plenty throw, and I don't need to remember to recharge everynight. It has 3 intensity levels and the strobe mode (the latter being more for impressing your friends...)

My two points of advice: Firstly I slid off the rubber sleeve and wrapped the light in electrical tape. This slimmed down the diameter just enough to make it fit better in my existing holster.

Secondly: I have the first generation with one button... which is a pain to operate, especially in gloves. Stinger recently released an updated version with an additional large button on the tail cap... a much needed improvement!

I don't think you'll be dissapointed (especially considering you can use your existing chargers)

You had a problem with the diameter? The diameter is exactly the same as the regular Stinger.

You're right... I wasn't very clear, let me qualify:

The Stinger LED is thicker than my Surefire 8Ax Commander and wouldn't fit in my existing bianchi holder... after taking the grip off, it fits perfect.

If the op already had the Stingers... it shouldn't be a problem. But sliding the grip off is always an option nonetheless.

I have a stinger LED and its great for how bright it is. The diameter is a little larger than the regular stinger (its a little tighter in the duty belt holders). My only issue with it is that the switch failed-it wont stay on ie. The momentary works meaning you have to hold the switch down to keep it on. Stinger fixed this for free and is a known issue. The new generations may have this fixed.

Its better/brighter than the pelican, and INOVA light.

Actually, it's a bit larger due to the rubber grip on it. It's roughly the same as the Stinger XT (it's something like .02" difference) IIRC.

I got one when it first came out, and I went to AAA in Dedham to try to find a holster. When I asked if anyone made anything that would work or fit, the answer I received was that there was nothing made by anyone that I would be able to get from them or elsewhere that would fit.

I went down the road to MHQ in West Roxbury and picked up an open top/bottom Bianchi holder that works fine.

I got my batch in and no they do not fit into the holsters due to the rubber creating friction. I might take the adivce posted earlier by removing the rubber and hope it will fit better.
