does anyone know if manchester puts on any real numbers of officers? I see that they test twice a year. If they are only puttting on 1 to 2 a year it does not make real sense for me to come up there from nj to test. Especially since there is usually a huge applicant pool.

Yeah they put on people and it is more than 1 or 2.Like you said the applicant pool is usally large as it is very hard to get a job in Mass so they apply in New hampshire in force. If you want to get into law enforcement, do what i did leave the northeast and go to the Florida or any state out west and southwest. They are desperate for cops and give you signing bonuses.( I got $10,000.00 For my education plus experience, i have been a special police officer for 3 years here in mass). I start the academy in the summer as i graduate from college this spring.Plus I didn't have to wait 7-9 months for an answer, if you are willing to leave the northeast there are plenty of police jobs out there. Go to officer.com and go to careers they have like 800 plus jobs listed. That's where i found my department. Good Luck

I don't know what there planning on putting on from this upcoming test. But in the past they have always tried to get at least 20, however most times they fall short of this number because of the lack of qualified candidates

Yeah they hire more than 1 or 2 people , but like you said huge applicant pool. It's hard to get a job in Mass so ton's of Mass kids take tests in New Hampshire and Vermont. Due what I did and head out to the southwest or florida. They are desperate for cops and give signing bonuses. I start the acadmey this spring, plus you don't have to wait 7-9 months to hear a reply. I got tired of waiting for job in the Northeast so I made the move.

WPD, Im thinking about doing alot of the same things you mentioned.... You mentioned that you worked as a special officer here in MA for 3 years and that helped you get the job in FL? Were you a SPO rule 400 or was it a different special officer job?

thanks

Just noticed in the paper today two ads for agencies, Nashua and Manchester. A few months later and still no card from CS , I'll be taking both tests. They both look good according to what I have read on this site.

Anyone know how these departments (or departments in general) view applicants with degrees in areas other than CJ. (business, accounting, etc.)

I retired from Manchester a few months ago and can tell you that both Nashua and Manchester are good departments. However, the best deal is the retirement system 20 years and 45 your out with the avg of your three highest earning years. Included in this is your OT and detail pay.

These cities usually do put on more than one or two new officers per batch but unlike Massachusetts they offer the exams often to freshen up the list with "highly qualified" candidates. There is a whispered feeling among some NH brass that candidates with experience in Massachusetts may bring with them some "Masschusetts problems." Mass natives do get hired and many have done very well, making it all the way up into the highest ranks of local departments and the State Police as well. My observation over many years is those who are Mass. natives do better when they start their police creers and training in New Hampshire. Some Mass. natives get their training and start their police careers in NH and after a few years of service here have returned to Mass. and entered very rewarding police careers there. Several local Mass police officials and a few Mass SP come to mnd.

The tests are not used for revenue generation and in the past several years all the major departments have held tests several times a year. Manchester, Nashua, and SP have held these tests becuase of expansio and to replace officers that have retired. These are not tests to establish a list. Not only is each department competing with one another, they are faced with certain time constraints because there is only one academy in the state.

I don't feel that there is any bias toward Mass applicants. in fact, coming from Boston myself I felt the system in NH was much fairer than CS. Manchester and Nashua's ranks are filled with people from Mass who are very successful and feel no need to go back to Mass LE. The cost of living, pay, retirement, and the quality of lfe make NH a very attractive place to live and work. I would encourage anyone interested in LE to check out the oppurtunities north of the border.

I agree with Zebra. The tests are not revenue inspired. There is a competition for best applicants between cities and it's a great place to work. As far as bias against Mass applicants there is none but I know many people who have been hired in Mass would not be hired here. The reasons are complicated but consider that in Mass I know for a fact the background check cannot be as probing as the one done by many NH agencies. Take that and the polygraph test, add the psychological and you begin to realize the exam is only a small part of the hiring process. The exam provides a list of potential candidates...not "the candidates" as Mass Civil Service does. Many people who do well on the test will never be hired in NH because other factors, oral boards etc come into play. The flexability given to NH departments in hiring is not available to Mass Departments. The system is fair but it is certainly not Civil Service. Just because someone does well on that written test there is no guarantee he or she will be hired. There is much more to the process. Thus the test is only the beginning and not the end of the hiring process.

Now I have spent a lot of time researching numerous NH departments because I know my chance of getting on in MA, especially my home town, is slim. I worry because I am not military personel, do not have my degree yet (though over 100 credits, and it's accounting), but I have never had one blemish on my personal record. This is not a whim decision by myself but I feel that this is the road I want to travel and know deep down this is the only career I see as close as a perfect fit for myself. I am not putting all of my eggs into one basket, thus the accounting degree pursuit, but this is a job that would bring such personal satisfaction and knowing that everyday would be different from the last. I am scheduled to take both of these tests, as well as other NH towns/cities, and was wondering if anything that I have mentioned would lessen my chance of earning a position?

There is nothing you said that would disqualify you from in some NH departments. Some require college and/or military experience. Some prefer CJ degrees. Saying that I know some departments usually will not hire a person unless he had worked for them on a part time basis (Hampton for example). Many who work part time in departments are hired full time in other communities, like Manchester. This way the community gets not only a look at the candidate but a look at how he has performed on the job. If I were you Adam I'd finish up my accounting degree and look at the possibilities out there in IRS, FBI, etc. The possibility of finishing up a degree and working as an accountant while also working part time as a police officer may seem odd but a few years of this may impress some federal agencies I have listed. As far as electives go...take foreign language. In the meantime your part time work will allow not only you but also recruiters to decide whether or not you really are a fit for the law enforcement profession.
