HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - A Massachusetts State Trooper was injured Saturday morning when his cruiser was rear ended on Interstate 91 in Holyoke. The resulting traffic tie-up extended for miles.
The accident occurred during a routine traffic stop when the unthinkable happened. "This other vehicle came around the corner, I don't know what the circumstances were but they hit him and he hit me," said Gary Truzilli of Greenwich, Connecticut.

According to State Police Sergeant Alan Joubert, Trooper James Wood was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 91 north, when another driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit both the cruiser and a car parked in the shoulder.

And it's not the first time this week, according to State Trooper Sergeant Richard Burnes, on Thursday a trooper was on a traffic detail on 91 north in Bernardston when he was rear ended. Luckily, the trooper was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash, which Burnes say may have saved his life.
Joubert says unfortunately in this line of duty incidents like this occur more than they should. "It's not usual for cruisers to be rear ended at these types of scenes, it's a very dangerous profession obviously this is a result of that," said Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Alan Joubert.
Both the trooper and the woman who hit the cruiser were taken to the hospital and later released.

Cars can always be replaced, at least he's going to be okay.

I know the person responsible in this incident was allegedly "asleep" - and I normally do not support the idea of legislation as a solution to problems - however when the hell are we going to get the slow down-move over law???

Most states: drop 20 mph below the limit and safely move over one lane for emergency vehicles.

This state: drop to 20 mph ABOVE the limit, and when you see pretty red and blue lights swerve into the other lane causing cars in that lane to spin out into the median, or get closer to the scene and stick your cell phone camera out the window, trying get the crappy video you just shot on youtube.

It seems to work pretty good. A few weeks back, we took a ride down south for a vacation. Through the Carolinas and Florida, you would see cars pulling to the left and clearing the slow lane, long before you could see the blue lights for yourself.

We will get it here when some state rep's family gets rear ended while sitting in front of a cruiser.

Like anything, it will take someone getting killed on a stop for this to happen..reactionary law. This is the 2nd cruiser hit in the BDL on 91 in three days, luckily in the other accident, the Trooper was out of his crusier. Get Well soon Woody.

My favorite is when they just slam on the brakes and stop in whatever lane they happen to be in.
