PLYMOUTH -- A 41-year-old Plymouth driver died after slamming his car into the brick siding of the Super Stop & Shop at Myles Standish Plaza Saturday morning, Plymouth fire and police officials said.
Firefighters responding to the 6:45 a.m. crash found the driver trapped in his car and had to use a jaws-of-life to free him, said Plymouth Battalion Chief Kevin Murphy. The man was taken to Weymouth’s Jordan Hospital, where he died.
"They had called for MedFlight, and they transported by ambulance to the Jordan instead. The guy didn’t make it," Murphy said.
Murphy said the driver hit the right side of the Stop & Shop, causing significant structural damage to the building.
"He hit the florists' department, and no one inside was injured," Stop & Shop spokesman Robert Keane said.
While the car did not enter the building, it did damage a brick wall and sheet wall inside, Murphy said.
Police are not releasing the man’s name, pending notification of family members, said Police Captain Michael Botieri.
The Stop & Shop, located on Samoset Street, was closed when the crash occurred, but it opened Saturday morning.
Keane said he could not comment on reports that the victim was a Stop & Shop employee.
The front end of the gray car was severely damaged in the collision, and was later taken away on a flatbed truck.
If you've ever been to Jordan Hospital you'd understand why the guy didn't make it.
