HINGHAM - A 30-year-veteran of the Hingham Police Department is now one of its deputy chiefs, and two long-serving ranking officers have been promoted.
Chief Taylor Mills, meeting with selectmen on Tuesday, formally introduced Lt. Brad Durant as the new deputy chief.
Durant was hired in Hingham in 1977 and had served as a lieutenant for the past seven years.
Mills lauded Durant for his service to the department and the community. Durant has always shown ‘‘poise and sound judgment’’ and is a ‘‘tested and proven leader,’’ and everyone in the department is proud to work with him, the chief said.
The deputy chief position had been vacant since September, when Mills was appointed chief.
As Mills recommended, selectmen also approved the promotions of Sgt. Kris Phillips to lieutenant and Patrolman Steven Dearth to sergeant.
Phillips and Dearth are 20-year and 14-year veterans, respectively. Both had interviewed for promotions that were made in November. Mills said it was difficult to choose among the ‘‘high-caliber’’ candidates then, and he said he was pleased to see two more of them elevated in rank.
‘‘We’re very lucky to have such a strong police force to make these decisions from,’’ Selectmen Chairwoman Melissa Tully said.
Congrats, Steve and Brad, well deserved...Hingham is lucky to have them.
