Duties: The purpose of the Department of Conservation and Recreation is to protect, promote and enhance our common wealth of natural, cultural and recreational resources for the well-being of all.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation, State Parks Division is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill two Park Ranger II positions in the Central Region.
The Ranger II patrols DCR facilities to promote compliance with rules and regulations, protect natural and park resources, and enhance visitor experience through providing a presence and being available for visitor information and education; coordinate with law enforcement officials for appropriate regulatory action; supervise Park Ranger I, and perform related work as required.
-Conduct patrols, effectively utilizing techniques and available resources, to enforce applicable laws and regulations, provide visitor services, assess facility resources, assist visitors with first aid, and other public services as required. -Supervise the activities of Rangers within the assigned region/district and coordinate those activities with Park Supervisors and the Regional Ranger. -Provide on the job training and orientation for assigned rangers. -Plan and develop interpretive and educational programs and workshops relative to assigned areas that promote the historical, cultural, environmental and contemporary use of state lands by conducting research, speaking to interested parties, etc. -Coordinate with facility/site supervisors in assigning and scheduling interpretive programs. -Conduct ongoing community outreach for interpretive programs and coordinate interpretive programs at special events. -Plan, design and create displays, brochures, flyers, and other public literature. -Assists in reviewing and maintaining a database for incidents and violations of rules and regulations and entering them into a central database. -Conducts investigations on behalf of the department, based on policy and assignment. -Procure equipment and materials and maintain an inventory and the condition of issued equipment. -Complete Bureau records, reports, files, and logs. -Attend seminars, workshops, training sessions, etc., in order to maintain proficiencies. -Participates in search and rescue operations in accordance with agency policy and assist in the search function as a team leader, search manager, or other member of the overhead team. -Assist, as needed, in the prevention, detection, and suppression of wildland fires. -Respond and assist park staff at major incidents. -Assist in the coordination of special events through the use of the incident command system. -Occasionally assist at statewide incidents or functions. -Assists in interviewing applicants for Ranger positions. -Assists in the training of personnel within the Bureau of Ranger Services and personnel outside of the Ranger program in Bureau related areas. -Conduct statewide and Bureau duties as assigned. -Administer special Bureau programs as assigned.
Qualifications: Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in park or resource management, environmental education, water resources or water supply management, or natural/cultural history interpretation, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in park and/or recreation management, resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
*Education towards such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
Special Requirements:
1. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
2. Possession of a current and valid CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) certificate from the American Red Cross or the American heart Association.
3. Possession of a current and valid standard first aid and personal safety certificate and first responder certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum entrance requirements, preference will be given to candidates with the following:
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license. Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively with the public. Ability to read, understand, interpret, and explain the laws, rules & regulations governing assigned unit activities. Knowledge of the standard procedures and techniques followed in foot, bicycle, vehicle, and other types of patrols. Ability to understand, explain, and apply the policies, procedures standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Ability to gather information by examining records and documents and through observing and interviewing individuals. Ability to read and interpret such documents as maps, charts, etc. Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information. Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency and dangerous situations. Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. Ability to navigate various terrains under extremely variable weather conditions by orientation with map and compass. Physical stamina and endurance. Current First Responder and CPR certificates.
Comments: This is a civil service position. If there is no civil service list for this title, employees appointed must take and pass the next Civil Service examination when administered. These positions are scheduled for 40 hours a week and requires working weekends and evenings.
Incumbents will be assigned to Districts and will work as assigned in locations within the district boundaries, with occasional special assignments:
Successful candidate is required to attend the National Park Service Seasonal Ranger Academy.
The successful candidate must complete and pass a Massachusetts CORI.
