Town approves reverse 911 plan

Program to be free until 2010

By Richard J. Hafey CORRESPONDENT

PAXTON— The town has joined a reverse 911 program that provides for notification of emergencies in or outside of the town by the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department.

After hearing a presentation about the program last night, the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Health approved the plan.

Tom Ashe, director of the sheriff’s Community Relations Reverse 911-Emergency Notification System, said the program provides two means of notification of emergencies in or out of town.

In an areawide emergency, everyone in town is notified by telephone, he said.

If it is a town emergency, a designated town official will notify the sheriff’s office, which, in turn, will notify residents.

He said notification can be townwide or for selected town departments and can be made within 10 minutes.

Mr. Ashe said the program will be free until 2010, after which there will be an $85,000 charge spread among the communities participating, based on population; 74 communities in Central Massachusetts are eligible.

He said eight to 10 towns, including Holden and Sterling, have signed on.

A “fail-safe” procedure will weed out false alarms, he said. It would require a designated person making the call, followed by a callback to a listed number from the sheriff’s office.

That would be good to have, though. I know our school district have something like that with messages, like parent/teacher night, no school etc.

That is so they can put "Call 911" on their cruisers and not catch shit for it.

In some counties in Oregon the Sheriff is totally in charge (hiring and firing)

They were delivering the decoy drag-queen prostitutes for the days "sting" operation. This was after they dropped the K-9 team off at the Post Office, and the inspection sticker strike team at Jiffy Lube!

Not to bust balls but the wagons are parked in the sally port, Belmont St side of the puzzle palace.

Screw it, if the SO wants to take over and hump all my calls they can have it. I'm sick of babysitting floaters all day. I wouldn't have a problem doing crosswords and homework all day while collecting a fat paycheck. Err, I mean being left alone to be more proactive...
