A “hardworking” 35-year-old Roxbury man who was blasted to death while visiting his girlfriend in Dorchester was not the intended target of the gunman, cops said.
Donald George Smith Jr. was shot outside 377 Park St., near his girlfriend’s home, at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Officers rushed to the apartment building after reports of gunfire at the intersection of Park and Greenbrier streets, and found Smith, who worked for a Boston security firm, lying outside with one gunshot wound.
Smith was rushed by ambulance to Boston Medical Center, where he later died from his wounds.
“Investigators are working hard to piece together exactly what happened, but it is believed he was struck by a bullet that was intended for someone else,” said Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll.
Police sources said Smith was described by friends and family as a “hardworking, nice guy.”
None of Smith’s relatives was available for comment and there was no answer at Smith’s home in Roxbury yesterday.
Smith’s murder is the city’s eighth by gunplay in what has been a bloody start to 2008, according to Boston police statistics.
It is the first shooting death since mid-January when Darius Jones, whom police identified as a known gang member, was shot dead as he left the funeral of another 2008 murder victim, Darrion Carrington.
Smith’s murder, meanwhile, remains under investigation.
“We would urge anyone who may have been in the area at the time to come forward,” Driscoll said.
