The UMass Police Department has begun the selection process for new police officer candidates. Applications are available at the University Employment Office in the Whitmore Administration Building.
Deadline for applications is March 30, 2008.
Written test will be administered on May 3, 2008. Police Officer Exam
POLICE OFFICER EXAM – MAY 3, 2008
DUTIES OF POSITION: Under supervision, patrols an assigned area for the purpose of enforcing laws relative to the prevention of crime, and motor vehicle laws, the apprehension of offenders, the protection of property and persons, the preservation of public peace, and the control of traffic; perform investigative duties, and related work as assigned.
SALARY: Base Salary: $36,713 Maximum Salary: $48,619 PLUS: uniform allowance ($750 annual), shift differential ($40/week), medical, educational and overtime (400 hours average annual, $14,000)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS * Must be eligible to enter and successfully complete a 21 week Municipal Police Training Committee approved academy, be a graduate of an approved academy, or be waived from academy requirements by the Municipal Police Training Committee. * Possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license. * POSSESS A CLASS A LICENSE TO CARRY FIREARMS AT THE TIME APPOINTMENT TO A POLICE OFFICER POSITION. (Note: You must be 21 years of age to get a Class A license.) * Must successfully complete a 14 week post-academy field training program * Have the ability to work at any hour and in all weather conditions. * Have the ability to learn and demonstrate job requirements after being trained.

Physical Abilities Test – June 2008 4. Board Interview – June 2008 5. Interview with Chief of Police 6. Background Investigation 7. Psychological Written Exam and Interview 8. Medical Examination
INABILITY TO ATTEND ANY PHASE WILL RESULT IN BEING WITHDRAWN FROM CONSIDERATION. NOTE: * Applications are kept on file for one year after date of receipt. * In accordance with State Law, no applicant who has been convicted of a felony can be appointed as a Police Officer and all applicants must be able to obtain a Class A License to carry firearms. * The Chief of Police interviews whenever a vacancy occurs. * Background Investigations and Psychological and Medical Examinations occur after receipt of a conditional offer of employment. I've read in previous forms that they don't hire anyone but continue to have these tests, is this still true?

They're at full staffing and they continue to have tests, so that's probably the case. Don't hold me to it though.

You osend in your info. They wack you 30 bucks to take the test....aprox 200-250 show up for it.....those who pass are invited to take the PAT test at SPA in New Braintree, only to never hear from them again after the test....pretty lame...

It seems like a frustrating process and I can definately see why some wouldn't even bother, but if you approach it with low expectations and are willing to risk 30 bucks and a few days time in exchange for a chance (albeit a slight chance) for a career with a solid department than it's worth the shot.
