Campus Police Officer II/Sergeant Functional Title: Campus Police Officer II/Sergeant FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Union: AFSCME Pay Rate: $646.89 Department Public Safety Job Description / Statement of Duties: The basic purpose of this position is to ensure and maintain a secure campus environment while providing direct supervision for the shift. Incumbents of this position are expected to oversee and directly supervise all department personnel on the shift in which he/she is assigned. The Sergeant is expected to embody the philosophy of Community Policing and to be a model of such for other officers in the department. The Sergeant is expected to ensure that his/her shift is providing professional service to the college community and its visitors.

Supervision exercised: Incumbents of positions at this level exercise direct supervision over, assign work to, and review the performance of police and security officers.
1. Supervise all department members on the assigned shift. Assign duties/responsibilities as needed. 2. Patrol campus and surrounding area to guard against trespass, theft, or damage to property. 3. Enforce state laws as well as the rules and regulations of the institution. 4. Investigate incidents/crimes and handle appropriately including related paperwork. Interview victims, suspects, and others as needed. Restrain or arrest suspects when necessary. 5. Comply with verbal and written directives from persons in higher authority. 6. Work alone with little or no direct supervision when necessary. Take charge when conditions warrant. 7. Keep administrators informed of significant events or occurrences according to established procedures, including the Emergency Notification Standard Operating Procedures. 8. Cooperate with other state, municipal, and federal law enforcement agencies. 9. Provide assistance to courts and grand juries in the prosecution of cases. 10. Enforce campus rules and safety regulations. 11. Give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner. 12. Perform the duties of Officer in Charge (OIC) overseeing shift operations in the absence of higher-ranking officers as required. 13. Ensure crowd control and adherence to college rules at all campus events. 14. Functions as first responder to medical emergencies occurring on campus, evaluate and/or assist ambulance personnel with transport to local hospital. 15. Keep a daily patrol log and shift summary. Ensure that shift officers are maintaining proper logs for each shift. 16. Assists in providing a safe, secure campus environment providing personal safety escorts for community members and visitors on campus. 17. Reports any misconduct of department personnel immediately to the Chief and Lieutenant. 18. Help organize and run Safety/Security programs for the college community. 19. Operate all Public Safety vehicles. Operation of vehicles includes patrol duties, escorts, deliveries, pickups, transport of community members and others. 20. Perform related work as assigned by Chief or Lieutenant. Required Minimum Qualifications: Must have successfully completed training in accordance with training requirements established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee. Must be eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer under M.G.L. 22C
Ability to pass a pre-employment physical after an offer of employment has been made.
Prior supervisory experience in a law enforcement agency.
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
Appointee must meet all of the requirements for certification under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 22C, Section 63 as a special State Police Officer and be warranted to receive police powers by the Massachusetts State Police Licensing Unit. Appointee must be eligible for appointment as a Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff. Preferred Qualifications Associates or Bachelors degree preferred. Prior campus law enforcement experience.
