Job Description The Town of Wells, a coastal community in So. Maine (62 square miles) with a year round population of 10,100 which quadruples in the summer, seeks an experienced, dynamic, innovative professional to lead the Police Department as Chief. The Wells Police Dept. is a progressive organization with 23 full time sworn officers, 8 civilian employees, 20 reserve officers and an annual budget of 2 million. The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership abilities and a record of success in public safety, organizational management, and possess a community service oriented policing philosophy. The Chief must have excellent oral and written communication skills; have intermediate level computer skills and knowledge of law enforcement computer systems and software; have the ability to become active in the community; and must have the ability to be effective at establishing and maintaining solid working relationships with Police Dept. personnel, other members of Town government, the Administrative Team of Department Heads, the Town Manager, the Board of Selectmen, the general public, and with county, state and federal authorities. Requirements include: Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by various courses/training in modern police administration, and related college courses; have at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience with a minimum of four (4) years of administrative supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training; must have graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy "Basic School" or have been waived or be eligible for such a waiver by the Academy; must be able to obtain the Executive Development Certificate from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. The individual must have a valid driver's license. The ideal candidate must also be able to successfully pass an extensive background check. The salary range is $68,000 - $81,000; salary will be commensurate with experience. The Town of Wells offers an excellent benefit package.
