They are currently looking to hire approximately 200-250 troopers

Posted by: WaterPistola

what do you think about the future of the FHP PBC?

Posted by: PBC FL Cop

There are all kinds of rumors going around about their fate.

Posted by: mikemac64

I like the idea of eliminating them. It's seems reasonable. Instead of paying these men and women what they are worth, we'll just eliminate them and artifically shift their responsibilities to the sheriff and locals. That will solve the low pay problem.

Great idea! Jeb Bush must be taking advice from his brother.

Gov, is some guy name Christie or something, but just as stupid as Bush.

Merge the FDLE, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and the F.H.P. to create a State Patrol, since State Police seems to scare the Sheriffs for some reason, and make the State Patrol contain these different entities as branches....They just won't be full service like a State Police agency is.

The new Governor is Charlie Crist (the former AG) and he's doing an OK job so far. Merging FHP, DOT and FDLE would make a "State Patrol" a full service agency. Combining uniform patrol and investigative services together would equate full service. It would be the logical thing to do, which is why it won't happen. Sheriff's are the top dogs down here and they won't give that up without a fight.

Posted by: Foxy85

Alright well take out the investigative part eg the FDLE, and just merge all the patrol functions together....

It's funny FHP used to be the only m/v enforcement on the highways, however the troopers were complaining that CDL enforcement "was not their job", so the state started another agency-Department Of Transportation for CDL enforcement. Now we have two different agencies working the same highways with the same authority. FHP just ended up losing a portion of their budget and officer positions.

FHP used to do major investigations as well, but with the same theory FDLE was created, which restricted FHP back to the highways.

Be careful what you wish for!!

Very good advice, and I hope they're listening here in the Bay State.

True.

Its Funny, I've Only Been Down Here For A Short Time But The Way They Seem To Have A Different Department For Everything Is So Far From Where Mass Is. The Academy That I'm In Has 11 Different Departments Enrolled. And Everyone Seems To Hate My Department.

I've yet to read the article that was posted on Officer.com regarding a merger for the state agencies, but personally I think it's unlikley. The house bill to merge FHP and FWC was shot down this year. The Sheriff's association is dead set against any merger of state agencies, and that is a very strong lobby to fight against. It makes sense to merge these agencies, and lop off all the upper management, and pass those savings down to make a competitive wage for line officers, but nothing in politics really makes any sense, now does it? =)

Not FHP, maybe BSO??

Posted by: PBC FL Cop

I just returned from Tallahasee and there are negotiations going on, which are considering a merger of DOT and FHP. It doesn't look good for any state law enforcement raises again this year.

What else is new? lol

There was a small advertisement on page 4 of the March 2008 issue of "American Police Beat" that says:

"Why does the Florida Highway Patrol currently have about 200 vacant troopers positions? Answer: Base pay for new troopers is $33,977.

"According to Policepay.net, the Florida Highway Patrol pays its troopers less than any other state agency."

Looks like the trooper's union probably ran the ad.

Sadly, that statement is not true!!

Posted by: Foxy85

Any other state POLICE agency yes!....any other state agency...probably not....DYS comes to mind lol....

Anyway, the FHP has long way to come....other wise the ol' story of them losing 9 troopers a month to other agencies is quite true...

Most southern State Police/Highway Patrol/State Patrol agencies have a starting pay that low.

This is a little outdated (2003-account for some inflation/raises in the last 5 years), but it gives you an idea of what state troopers across the country made a few years ago. Some of these guys made a pittance:

FL Dept of Transportation Police and FL Dept of Agriculture Police are both less paid than FHP. Their starting pay was around 31K, which would qualify them for welfare. It's disgraceful.

Between that and Amendment 1 passing there isn't really any motivating factors to transplant. How's that passing affect your SO PBC? You guys hiring or on a freeze like so many others?

Whoa, those can't be right, even for 2003, no one seems to make that much

The county and city agencies are still unsure exactly how they are going to be affected by amendment 1, so it's yet to be determined. Many agencies are only hiring people to replace ones who leave. There doesn't seem to be a big panic right now from what I've seen, so I'm sure they will be fine.

I work for the state, so we are feeling the pinch right now hard. The state relies heavily on tourism and state revenue to fund state law enforcement and with the housing market and gas prices in trouble so is the State of the State!!

Counties and cities have their own taxes, which is why they are doing better right now.

As far as relocating, it is a buyers market, homes which were selling for 400K a few years ago are selling for 250K now. Timing is everything and many agencies received large increases over the past couple of years based on the then skyrocketing housing market, so people relocating now could reap both benefits.

I have great hopes that the current House Bill which aims to increase suspended license reinstatement fees in order to fund a step pay package for us passes. We shall see how that goes. Money aside, our new Colonel is doing a lot of good things for us equipment and policy wise.

To those of you looking to move here from New England, don't get scared off by the low salary. Cost of living is so much lower here, that it all works out. My last year in MA with details and overtime I made about $75K. I only made around $47K here this year, and my standard of living is so much better than it was in MA.

As far as people leaving, while it is occurring everywhere in the state, it seems to be centered in South Florida. The cost of living there is so much higher, that our salary is not competitive. In Central and North Florida, while the pay needs work, it's not terrible. You can not believe everything that you read on internet message boards. Unfortunatley, many of the public sites are filled with a small group of the same complainers that would complain if they made $100K a year. That being said, there is definate room for improvement.
