MARLBOROUGH - Days after police say he took a frying pan to his 79-year-old landlord's face, Edward Ablazey was in Marlborough District Court using the sleeve of his dark sweatshirt to wipe away tears.
Ablazey, 46, of 52 Broad St. Apt. 3, faces several charges in connection with a Jan. 27 attack on landlord Arthur Wallace and a fellow tenant, Fred Abelli, at his Broad Street home.
Wallace required treatment at a hospital for his injuries.
After about an hour of testimony from Abelli and Marlborough Police Officer Kenneth McKenzie, Judge Austin Philbin ordered Ablazey, a former house painter who has six convictions on his record, jailed until his next court appearance, Feb. 29. Philbin decided he could not let Ablazey walk free and ensure the safety of Wallace or the public.
Ablazey faces three assault charges, witness intimidation charges - Wallace had been trying to evict Ablazey, and one attempted murder charge.
Wallace suffered a broken nose, an injury to his left eye which was swollen shut, and cuts to his face, McKenzie told Philbin.
"He (Wallace) had blood all over him," said McKenzie.
Abelli said he came from his upstairs apartment to check on the sound of someone moaning coming from the downstairs communal kitchen. He said he hurt his knee, elbows and forehead when Ablazey pushed him into a wall.
Yesterday, Abelli hobbled to the stand with a brace around his knee and told the court he ran out of the building and tried to flag down three cars before reaching a neighbor and calling police.
Yesterday, Ablazey's lawyer, Kenneth Gross, said Ablazey had bipolar disorder and does not receive proper medication because he is uninsured. He also said the incident was "fueled by alcohol and substance use."
Abelli said Wallace had suspected Ablazey of drilling holes into a coin- operated washer machine.
"I knew something was going to go down," he said.
He also said Ablazey had asked him earlier that night if he wanted to "smoke some stuff," saying the "stuff" was crack cocaine.
The 52 Broad St. apartment complex has served as a "sober house" for recovering addicts. However, the Board of Health and Marlborough Inspection Services have called the apartments illegal. City Hall instructed tenants not to pay rent, said Abelli.
Assistant District Attorney Erin Bell called the attack "utterly heinous" and argued that Ablazey should not be released pending trial.
"He preyed on the most vulnerable of our community," she said.
Between now and his next court date Ablazey will be in jail. Doctors may evaluate Ablazey's mental state in the interim, the court indicated.
