HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) -- Some lawmakers in Long Island's Suffolk County want to force construction companies to prove their workers are legally eligible to work in the United States. State Association of Counties Executive Director Stephen Acquario says it's the first time a New York county has considered the idea. Suffolk Legislator Brian Beedenbender says the measure would apply to home builders, electricians and plumbers. Violators could lose their county licenses. Some other legislators, a major business group and immigrant advocates are blasting the proposal, even before Beedenbender formally unveils it Thursday. The critics say it's unworkable and unnecessary. Beedenbender says he wants to make sure all contractors are playing by the same rules.
