Immigration workers in St. Albansm VT will hold a union vote Thursday.
Employees at the U.S. Agency of Citizenship and Immigration Services, process Immigration applications for the federal government. When the Stanley Corporation took over in December, they immediately cut pay and benefits to about half of their employees.
Now the 400 workers want to unionize. The first of four union votes is scheduled for Thursday.
Stanley is threatening legal action.
This story was spotted in the Vermont media today by the Inspector and brings to mind a trend which concerns me and should concern Americans everywhere. This is another example of where well-connected government contractors, often subdivisions of mega government contractors, take over what used to be government operations and turn them into for profit operations.
Google some of the contractors like Stanley, United States Investigative Service, Blackhawk and others and you will find a web of businesses, many operated by well connected big Washington campaign contributors who have worked their way into providing services that used to be performed by federal employees. Many managers have no background in anything remotely connected with security or public safety.
A friend who was being backgrounded recently told me of "in-experienced" kids checking neighbors when they were going for a "top secret"
clearance. These "agents" of The United States Investigative Service were fresh out of college students being paid an hourly wage by a private company to do something which used to be done by the FBI, DIA or retired agents working under direct government contract. Anyone see a weakness here?
There is a trend to reduce spending by privatizing at all levels of govenment but does this really save money and what risk are we allowing by turning over such important and sensitive work to people hired to save money and increase corporate profit?
Federal, state and local government jobs make up one of the last strongholds of the American middle class. This middle class is what makes America great.
What used to be the largest group of middle-class jobs, those in manufacturing, have alredy been out-sourced to lands across the sea with slave wages and working conditions to increase corporate profit. I believe most people now realize the mistakes made here. The economy has been suffering as a result.
Now we are allowing well-connected business people to profit more than ever before with the privitization of many federal services at the expense of the great American middle class.
This attempt to unionize by workers in Vermont after a loss of pay and other benefits is just another cry from the middle class for help.
