At the max scale; thats about $2,550.00 per month, before taxes.
How the hell do they expect these people to live in the city on pay like that?

Posted by: mschumann

thats what i was thinking Kozmo, wonder how often they hire.

Are they cinsidered legit police officers?

That depends who you ask.

I know one Officer and he is a good guy. He has a good understanding as to what he is and what he can do, but I can't speak for the rest of the department.

I heard they were trying to get vests. I don't think they carry.

Posted by: Kilvinsky

If you check some previous threads centered around the Boston School Police you will see that, on the whole, they seem rather disgruntled, under equipt and looked down upon by many in the school department. I hope and pray that much of that is not true but it does seem that, when working in the Boston School system, you would give your first line of protection all the tools and respect needed to do the job effectively, and I ain't talkin' storm troopers, just cops working with kids.

Brockton School cops are armed and that's a smaller and by and large safer system. What's up with Boston?

Posted by: k12kop

You'll make arrests and sign off on complaints, Deal with gangs, drugs weapons and assaults just like the street cops. The hours are better and the summers are pretty slack. It's not civil Service and the Scool Dept. signs your paycheck. No firearms, you won't get rich, but it's good experience if you are still young enough for Civil Service or have kids in school in the city (we do have some good schools) And all of the politics and pettiness of any small department. It's all about what you make of it.

I am a School police Officer and its a great job! The pay is low but it is a great place to start in law enforcement.

i think the starting pay is about 14.25 with out colleges credits.

k12 nice pic in the east boston times thanks..lol

As someone who is trying to get the foot in the door of LE it sounds like a great job to start out in.... The only problem would be relocated from Malden to Boston.

Im sure working as a BSP officer would look great on a resume too

Posted by: BSP268

if anyone haves any Q? about the school police pm me

Posted by: mschumann

curious to know if BSP need the additional 60 hours of training for the firearms to be considered... I know they do not carry but i just wasnt sure

Posted by: Bri9801

I hear it's a great job if you like not having the basics neccesary to protect yourself and others, radios that don't really work too well, and an administration that doesnt' back you.

That description isn't limited to the Boston School Police, trust me.

Posted by: coldsteel

I would much rather throw myself in front of a bus than walk down the halls of some of those schools without a vest, gun and a radio that worked. And with pay like that your gonna find yourself eating whatever the school cafeteria cooked up. Come on now what you would make in a month working that job the drug dealers and gang member students make a day...LOL.

Posted by: BSP4141

Like It Was Said Before Its All What You Make Of It. Its Really Not A Bad Job. All But Two Officers And One Sgt Works Days, Weekends Off. Plenty Of O.t. I Know Guys Here Who In 20 Years Made A Handfull Of Arrests, But If You Are A Worker You Can Make Several A Day (kirk). If You Really Think About It Most Of The Shootings Done In The Streets Of Boston Are Public School Kids So We Deal With The Same Eliment.

I think the BSP should just go to the gym more and eat plenty of protein ....... That way they will be walking the halls w/ 2 guns haha. I know.... Corny as all hell.

How do you guys at the BSP go about being proactive to make arrest?

Posted by: cheezsta

Being a school police officer has its perks like in the summer we rarely work we go in for a about half a day and get paid for a full day. We have the best schedule work Mon-Fri mostly 7-3 all weekends off also you get every holiday off with pay and when school vacations come around you really dont do nothing. If you want a place to start a career in law enforcement its a great place to start if you wanted to you could make a handfull of a arrest a day. Its true we are not fully equiped but you make the best with what you have and we also have a great working relationship with the Boston Police. If you have any questions just pm me

Posted by: BSP4141

Well For Starts You Cant Swing A Dead Cat Without Hitting A Kid With A Warrent. The School Department Provides Plenty Of Tools. A Cop Can Only Search For Weapons Not Drugs, But A School Administrator Can Search All Property Of A Student For What Ever They Want. You Just Need To Use Your Head And You Can't Lock Up People All Day.

Posted by: mschumann

is it very difficult to get on the BSP?

Posted by: Kilvinsky

The Boston School Police have my unlimited respect. I don't think I could do that job, but I know someone has to and you guys do a great job. I sincerely mean that. I've met a number of you over the years and you really are a great group.

You really have to under all the negatives you have to deal with. mshumann, if you were to get on there, I KNOW you would learn more there in one week than in 1 year in some towns. You HAVE to know your stuff to work there without the propper equipment. If you get on there, listen to the veterans and learn. They know what they're talking about.

Posted by: mschumann

exactly what im looking for.... Anyway to get my foot in the door, gin experience and learn. Definitly have no interest in just working somewhere, doing nothing and just sitting around and collecting a check. If i wanted that, after im done with my SPO 400 in a few months I would just work for some security company pretending to be something im not.... and i do not mean that to be a negative comment to anyone who works as a SPO for a security company because I know there are alot of hard working SPO's out there.

I am not just looking for a job is basically what im trying to say if that makes any sence

thx

I also have the ultimate respect for the Boston School Police, having worked with them a couple of times when I was a housing cop. However, there isn't much practical difference between them and the security companies like Longwood which patrol the private apartment complexes in Boston like Harbor Point (other than uniforms), and at least they have the proper equipment (firearms) to do the job safely.

Perhaps it's just because I'm getting old, but I'm not a big fan of bringing pepper spray and an ASP to a gunfight.

Posted by: Macop

The BSP definatley get my respect, I have heard many things from a family member who used to work there. I don't know how you guys do it, but god bless ya, I don't think I could.

Posted by: new guy

I can't think of anyone that has a more legitimate beef about being unarmed than these guys. There's a reason why many of these schools have a BPD presence at the break of school each day. You guys have my utmost respect as well.

Posted by: BSP268

In the days of busing the student would attempt to steal the boston police firearms in the hallways of the schools. There are 500 to 1800 students in a school a day! I think any School Police Officer that has been in a coulpe of roles (fights) with suspects would say it is safer for the officer not to have a firearm..

Why would they attempt to steal the firearms when those same 500 to 1800 students are maybe better armed than BPD....

I do hear what you're saying, but I would rather take my chances with the possibility of having to retain my handgun than the possibility of (while unarmed), dealing with an armed suspect that decides that they are not going without a fight. It's my understanding that you guys pull in quite a hall of guns, knives, and various weapons each year. The idea of unarmed PO's routinely confiscating lethal weapons from potentially dangerous suspects raises some serious issues about Officer safety.

Posted by: mschumann

I think there are good points on both sides of the argument. On one hand it is important for an officer to have the tools needed to secure his/her safety. more and more kids are bring weapons into school which provides more and more opportunities for something bad to happen. Another note is the school shootings that happen.

On the other hand i can see the point of having armed officers only adding the the weapons found in school. In the case of an officer breaking up a fight and losing control of his weapon leads to the possibility of making a fight into something horrible.

I personally do not know the answer........ I went to highschool at Malden High. Even there, city police would come in and do searches and pull out all sorts of weapons and drugs. And thats only Malden! Couldnt imagine Boston... I remember one day, outside of the school a fight broke out between 4 girls (2 on 2)... Eventually one girl got another on the ground and mounted her. From this mounted position she then reached for a knife in her back pocket. I couldnt believe my eyes! I grabbed her hand and took the knife. The girls broke it up and fled the scene and I gave the knife to the officers who responded.

The worse part of the story... I had met a new girl who had just tranfered to Malden High from a school in CA. I was showing her around and was going to take the bus with her after school. I was in the middle of telling her that Malden High was not that bad when this incident happened haha

Yeah, we want details....LOL!!!!

Posted by: BSP268

I under stand what you are saying but I have been on the school police for 6 years and had 5 gun incidents in the last 2 ½. years I wish I had a firearm sometimes but I don’t and there is nothing I or any of the other school officer can do about it…in a school year the school police have sized approximately 600 to 700 knifes 5 or 6 hand guns and tones of 94c and 100’s of f!@#ing fights. This is an age old debate at the school police..

stop it! the kids that do have weapons is less then 10% of the students in the schools.

Posted by: Kilvinsky

I'm still waiting for the rest of the story of the mounted girls. Should this thread be continued in the 'After Hours' area?

And BSP268, I will not second guess you on what is and isn't right at your job, you know better than any of us, but even with only 10% of them having weapons, I'd feel safer armed. The vast majority of the folks we deal with on a regular basis aren't armed, but I like being ready (well, equipped) for those few that are.

Going back to my earlier post though, you guys are top notch and I trust your instincts and knowlege and wish you nothing but the best.

Posted by: k12kop

We would all feel safer armed, It's been an ongoing argument since the department was formed, Down side is that we are arguing with people who see things with a School Department mentality.

Posted by: mschumann

haha mounted girls 2 on 2! Probaly should have guessed that was coming. But when i think back to that incident.... the way those 4 girls looked...... I would never ever associate them with anything sexual haha

The way they looked.... It wouldnt be out of the range of possibilty that they were men with long hair haha

Still way more armed students/thugs than armed school cops...

Posted by: BSP268

has anyone had a interview!

Posted by: mschumann

im reluctant to reply to the posting because i have yet to take the SPO training (march) plus i dont live in Boston.

I would like to hear how the hiring process is and how difficult it is to get on.

Thanks

Cheez.. I know you're new here, but you may want to ask a Mod to edit the above from your post. You'd be surprised at who may be lerking and reading posts on this site.

Hate to say it but that job sucks bad I worked there for five years. I couldn't wait to get out. The Department has some good men and woman there but the Department is bad news. The Boston School Police makes alot of arrest fight with the kids taken guns and knifes off of kids. In the line of harm every day but they get no respect from the schools the kids and sometimes Boston PD treats them like crap. They will never be armed cause the chief won't back them. Alot of people that work there just take the job because its a easy city job to get. No test very little requirments. They take alot of thier officers from the security companies that work the housing project, Because they don't want to pay for training. I feel bad for the men and woman there cause its a dead end job with low pay. You wear hand cuffs and a radio thats it so if you want to call that being a cop with hand cuffs and a radio then jump right in but that Departments really sucks bad. Beware

Posted by: Kilvinsky

A job is what you make of/get out of it. At my job, I walk around work saying "This place sucks" all the time and yet there are people who line up trying to get in there. My job DOES suck, for a number of reasons, but there are plenty of good things as well (which is one of the reasons I'm still there after 23 years). That can be true of any job.

Bottom line, no matter how bad a job might be to person "A", person "B" might think it's the balls and no matter what a job might be like, it's a job and it's a foot in the door at the least, if not a career.

Sure beware, but don't forgo a job opportunity because someone didn't like it. Those complaints might be right on the money for someone, but not for others.

Posted by: badboys

I can see what your saying but Im say this because I lived it with 50-60 other members of that Department. When you hear that one of your brother officers got shot on the job and all the Chief does is give him a Sgt postion and says thanks for taken one for the team. I consider that as a job that I don't think anyone normal would feel good with and that is Person A-B-C-DEFG. I have alot of friends still on that department and I'm not bashing them but that department is a joke. Those men and woman bust their humps in them bad a$$ schools and get treated like their safety does not matter and thats from their own chief. Majority of the Officers are there because its a job not because they want to be. If they had a choice they choose somewhere else some just don't have the oppertunity that other may have. Thats fact cause I lived it!!!
