FITCHBURG -- A local convenience store owner has been charged with indecent assault and kidnapping after he and another man were arrested Thursday for allegedly groping a female employee.
Antonio Georges, 60, of 303 Water St, who owns the M&M Variety Store on Water Street in Fitchburg, was arrested Thursday morning for allegedly groping the employee and then holding her against her will, according to court documents.
Fitchburg District Court Judge Robert Gardner set bail at $3,000 for Georges Friday and ordered him to stay away from the victim and her family. Georges later posted bail.
Georges' cousin, George Thomas, 48, of 2 Blackthorn Drive, Worcester, was also arrested and charged with kidnapping following the incident, court documents said.
Thomas -- a consultant with the U.S. State Department -- was released on $2,000 bail Friday.
Assistant District Attorney Patricia Smith told Gardner that the incident began Wednesday night when Georges allegedly touched the 31-year-old victim inappropriately as the two were closing up the convenience store.
"The victim then pushed Mr. Georges away, at which time he said 'What? You don't like it?'" Smith said.
Georges -- who has owned the store for seven years -- allegedly called the victim Thursday afternoon and asked if she was coming to work. Georges allegedly told the victim she had to give him a letter of resignation when she initially told him on the phone she didn't intend to come in.
Georges then allegedly offered the woman $2,000 not to tell his wife or police about the incident, according to court documents.
The victim allegedly agreed to the deal and Georges told her he would have the money after Thomas arrived, according to court documents.
Georges allegedly locked the front door when the woman returned to the store with her 12-year-old daughter, at which point Thomas yelled at her and told her not to go to the police because he had friends on the force and no one would believe her story, Smith said.
Gina Wilson, of Fitchburg, an attorney representing both men, told Gardner the victim's allegations were false. "After discussing this with my clients, it appears a much different set of events occurred," Wilson said.
