FRAMINGHAM - A Framingham man at first refused to remove a rosary before he was placed into a holding cell at the Police Department on Wednesday, but then tore it off his neck and hit three officers with it, police said.

Richard J. Mayhew, 22, had been arrested at 8:34 p.m. after he refused to leave an acquaintance's Second Street apartment, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.

Officers arrived at the apartment after a 911 call and found Mayhew standing outside, along with a woman and a young child.

"The woman yelled several times that Mayhew had a knife," said Shastany. "With his left hand, they saw Mayhew throw a shiny object under the car."
The officers ordered Mayhew onto the ground at gunpoint and handcuffed and searched him. Mayhew began yelling, drawing people out of their apartments.

"He was screaming obscenities at the officers," said Shastany. "He struggled against the officers, pushing into their chests, as they put him in the cruiser. He started screaming at the top of his lungs, 'Police brutality. Someone get a camera and take pictures.' "

The woman, whom police did not name, said Mayhew refused to leave her apartment. She told him she was going to call the police and he went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and went outside to wait for police.

The officers found the kitchen knife underneath a car, Shastany said.
On the way to the station, Mayhew said he was going to kill the officers and their families.

At the station, the officers told him they needed all of his personal effects, including his rosary, made of wooden beads.

"He then ripped it off and swung it, striking several officers," Shastany said.

Mayhew, of 25 Deloss St., struggled so much, the officers had to pepper spray him, the lieutenant said.

Mayhew was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of a dangerous weapon. His arraignment results were not available yesterday.
