January 24, 2008 11:35 PM Border patrol agents need better support
Protecting our country's security is a dangerous task, as is protecting ourselves from thefts, murders and fires.
When we think about the real heroes in our society, we usually think of the individuals who serve in our military, police departments, fire departments and emergency medical personnel. The praise and support we give these men and women are rightfully deserved, for they put their lives on the line to save ours.
However, another job sector which also deserves equal praise and support is our border patrol agents. For decades, these hard-working, self-sacrificing individuals have been basically ignored by our national government.
Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have ignored our border patrol agents' job needs, preventing our agents from effectively stopping illegal immigration into our country. Past presidents from both political parties are also greatly responsible for this failure.
Where are our presidential candidates regarding these breaches of our national security? Why are they not speaking out in our defense? Why are they not supporting our border patrol agents in stopping violations by Mexican military and police?
Just recently, Senior Border Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar Jr. was killed by a vehicle driven by suspected drug smugglers in southeastern California. Did any reader hear one word of this from any presidential candidate? I didn't. Yes, as usual, our nation's economy is our No. 1 presidential issue, but we also need secured borders to keep our nation sovereign.

I find it quite ironic that the US has only 13,000 BP Agents while Israel, the size of New Jersey, has about 36,500 and Thailand has 66,000. What's wrong with the picture???
