More than a year of dogged detective work by a state trooper who refused to quit on the memory of a disfigured Revere man “run down like a dog” by a runaway driver paid off with an arrest in New York last week.
“I’m very, very happy,” said victim George Azarian’s first cousin, Brian Rebholz, 63. “He was run down like a dog. He was a nice human being and he didn’t deserve it.”
The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office said Milena Johana Henao Giraldo, 27, was being driven back to the Bay State yesterday afternoon for a Monday court date when she will be arraigned on charges of motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Azarian was struck and killed New Year’s Eve in 2006 while crossing Ocean Avenue in Revere. The crime was caught on camera, but while the grainy surveillance footage showed a silver Dodge Intrepid hit Azarian, it didn’t reveal the license plate number or enough detail to see what year the car was made.
State trooper Joel Balducci took the scant information and tracked down every Dodge Intrepid in Revere, Winthrop and Chelsea, until he hit pay dirt at an East Boston auto body garage. Workers there told Balducci the car was being repaired for damages to the windshield, headlight and hood, precisely the sort of damage that the car in the video had sustained. Based on his work, prosecutors were able to get an indictment against Giraldo.
Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley praised Balducci’s “relentless pursuit of knocking on all these doors” to ensure justice for Azarian.
Azarian, who suffered a facial deformity at birth, was a beloved figure at Revere’s Shipwreck Lounge, where he worked, said owner Louis Padova, who ran to the back of the ambulance the day Azarian was struck.
“He was a cleanup man. He used to come in every day,” Padova said. “Everybody loved the guy.”
