Lateral Transfer Question

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

I searched this subject, but couldn't find my answer. At the end of July I will have my academy cert., and no guaranty on a job. Some of the Lateral non-cs jobs you see dont say "must have two years experience" or so on and so forth. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on this subject, is that naive of me for applying to these after the academy or not. Just looking for some input. Thanks

It can't hurt, most departments want laterals just for the sake of saving money. I think if you had experiance that would just be a bonus in their eyes.

apply for everything you can. You can't sell yourself in an interview if you don't give yourself the opportunity. Many of these towns are looking to save money on academy training so you have that working in your advantage

My town is non-cs. We advertised last year for academy strongly preferred and have a history of hiring only academy trained people with at least a few years experience. The academy trained people we got were problem children and we ended up hiring two guys off the street and putting then through the academy. You never know how it will play out. Apply anyway.

Just to clarify, a true "lateral" is only done from one civil service department to another.

I say apply everywhere; you can't be hired if they don't know you want the job.

i have a question..... if you attend an academy in Mass for a non civil serivce dept. and then you take the cs exam can you lateral to one of those depts or will they not take you??

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

It's not a lateral, they hire you off the list like anyone else ONLY if you are high enough, they won't reach down 25 names for YOU because you have an academy.

Yes, they might.

If i'm correct, you have to get through your dept's probationary period, and get your CS status before you can lateral to any other dept.

Not true, if the Chief thinks he can get away with skipping a few people under the radar, he will....I for one know it has happen in one town...

It is true... If your working for a non civil service department, the only way you can get hired is off the list, as an original appointment just like someone on the list without the academy or police experience. A lateral transfer is from one cs department to another. If you leave a non cs service department for a cs department you are resigning from one job and being hired in another department, thats not a lateral. Skipping a few people under the radar is calling bypassing candidates, and unless your tied with the people that are being skipped it doesnt fly. You have the right to appeal.

Not saying it flies....I am saying it happens though...

Sorry so late but thats not true, just have to complete a year of probation, up to hiring department if they want you though not completed, but not true CS starts when you sign for the job prior to the academy, your start date.

Probation just leaves you vulnerable.
