Anyone know any other department in Rhode Island that have Reserve Officers. I think Woonsocket does or had them and Newport. Any info is helpful. Thanks in advance.

Last I saw the only dept. with REAL reserves was Woonsocket and they still have that program. The rest of the depts. have stuff like community officers that don't carry firearms and don't respond to any calls or anything.....

I believe that most, if not all of the cities and towns in RI have done away with part-time patrol officers due to insurance issues. Many departments still have reserve/auxilliary officers, which are mostly retirees that work details, but I don't think there is much active patrol/police work performed by reserves.

Reserves are a huge liability. Furthermore who wants to lay their a.. on the line for nothing. Not me.

I know Woonsocket is looking to hire full time patrol officers, just curious how one would go about applying for a pt-reserve position with them? I live fairly close to Woonsocket so this peaks my interest. Thank you.

I just checked out the FAQ section on the woonsocket pd website...

Q:
How do I become a reserve police officer?

A:
The Woonsocket Police Department no longer has a reserve police officer program.

Too bad, would be a good place to work part-time to get a foot in the door

^^^ DOH! Never mind, thanks for the help.

The insurance company for all RI communities told everyone a few years ago they would not insure reserves any longer do to liability issues.

Your better off looking in MA. There plenty of towns that have reserves that work the same as fulltimers. If you are close to Woonsockett check Millville, I have a buddy that works there they are happy with thier new chief. Look at the surrounding towns as well, good luck.
