I am trying to compare as well as contrast the benefits of the NEPBA vs FOP(with the legal defense fund). If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it?
My department is going to be changing unions and I am trying to show the differences to members of my department who are holding out for the FOP! Thanks.

I can't comment on the NEPBA but as the Treasurer of our FOP labor committee and can you to look over the FOP's website at http://www.grandlodgefop.org and do some research. I do know the legal defense fund when it comes to protection with the FOP is pretty good. I have had several officers take advantage of it and have been successful. When it comes to monetary value it may seem like a waste but sometimes you just never know when something might happen on duty. On a side note with the FOP. Look into buying a lifetime membership instead of having a certain amount taken out of your paycheck every pay period. Usually a lifetime membership is around $400-$500.

NEPBA is a union, the FOP is a fraternal organization. I may be wrong, but I don't think the FOP can act on your behalf when it comes to contract arbitrations. Well, at least up north, down south I think they're starting to due to lack of unions. I also don't think the FOP handles grievences. Their Legal Defense fund,(the same as the MPA's??), is a great option though.

We dumped the IBPO for the NEPBA. Cops representing cops, not janitors. But I've also got the MPA and FOP cached in my arsenal as backups..

We have the NEPBA, and have in our contract that the City pays our individual memberships in the MPA Legal Defense Fund.
