BOSTON -- While inmates in Massachusetts prisons may prefer to watch "The Shawshank Redemption'' or "Sweeney Todd,'' a federal court judge's ruling means the best they can do is "The Wizard of Oz" and Disney flicks.
U.S. District Court Judge Patti Saris rejected an inmate argument that the Massachusetts Department of Correction violated the Constitutional Rights of inmates by banning movies rated R, NC-17 and X, according to The Globe. This leaves only G, PG and PG-13 rated movies.
Saris said the ban on movies served a legitimate purpose by shielding prisons from depictions of sex and violence.
Saris wrote that the court defers to the Department of Correction's "rational conclusion that using the rating system will cull out movies most likely to have an adverse impact on security and rehabilitation.''
The legal challenge was brought by Anthony Gaskins, an inmate at MCI-Cedar Junction who is serving a life sentence without parole.
Joining Gaskins in the lawsuit was William M. Tyree, a former U.S. Army Green

Beret, who is 27 years into a life sentence for the 1979 murder of his wife in their Ayer apartment. Tyree argued the ban deprives inmates of seeing socially responsible movies.

a guy who murdered his wife should not be watching violent movies. For once the courts said no to these scumbags

They should be forced to watch Pauly Shore movies 24x7.
Never again will they desire to watch another movie.
