ORLANDO, Fla. — A role reversal ensued when an Orlando police officer became a crime victim, and someone else stepped in to catch the criminal.
Police on bicycles are a common site downtown. Their job is to protect the public and prevent crime.
There's also a new team of downtown ambassadors. Their job is to provide information, but on Wednesday night the role of the police and the ambassadors was reversed.
"We observed a gentlemen falling in the middle of the street on a bicycle. He was intoxicated," Downtown Ambassador Richard Manning said.
Manning said when he and his partner approached the man they realized the bike he was riding was stolen.
According to Orlando police, one of their downtown bike officers had parked his bike in front of Kres restaurant when a man described as a transient decided to jump on it and take off.
The alleged bike thief, Matthew Mathers, 27, is the same man the two ambassadors stopped.
"Well, he said someone had stolen his bike, so I guess he felt he should take a bike -- he just took the wrong organization's bike," Manning said.
The ambassadors radioed police and the officer whose $1,200 bike was stolen came and made the arrest.
Manning said he's just glad he could help the police out.
"The purpose of my job is to protect the citizens of the city, and being a city employee that is city property. So, I expect them to do the same for me if they saw somebody steal my Segway and I know they would do so," Manning said.
