January 18, 2008 6:00 AM NEWMARKET — Police believe a baby who lives in town was the subject of a hoax in which the child was posted for sale on the Internet Late Wednesday afternoon, the Newmarket Police Department learned of a www.craigslist.org posting of a 1-year-old child for sale or lease. On Thursday night, police located the baby, who is safe at home. INFO WANTED
Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Newmarket Police Department at 659-6636.
Police believe the baby is the same child posted on craigslist, but are continuing to investigate. Police had not yet made any arrests. With the cooperation of Craigslist, Yahoo! and Comcast, police traced the Internet Protocol address from which the ad originated to a Dover location. There they found the wireless device, but there were no children who appeared to be in danger or even living at the address. People at the location, the address of which police did not release, cooperated with investigators from the Newmarket and Dover police departments, said police. Police are looking into whether the Dover-based wireless Internet router was hijacked and the posting was placed as a joke. Either way, that type of posting is illegal, True said. According to police, the posting read, "My daughter is almost one year old and is driving me nuts. If you have always wanted a child of your own and you either (expletive), or can't get approved for adoption (then) this is (for) you. I am somewhat flexible on the terms of the lease. If you decide you would like to purchase the child at the end of the lease, all baby clothes and toys that I have are included in the final sales price. Serious inquiries only."
