Hey,

Does anyone have any information on the Baltimore Police Department. I am just wondering if it is a good department? pay? and do you think it is a good move to make from mass?

Thanks

Eeeek! Sounds too much like work!

Just watch The Wire on HBO and then ask yourself if you still want to work there.

Go to Montgomery County PD. My friend has been on there for a little over a year, and he LOVES it. Good money, take home cars (all crown vics being replaced with Chargers) big, busy department, and pretty nice scenery

Montgomery Co PD is one of the best paid PD's down here. Most departments down here have take home cars. Cost of living is high though.

I would not recommend Baltimore City PD, that place is a different world. Too many City guys getting shot there. Do some research about the city and see if you want to work there. Good luck.

They were testing in Mass about a year ago. They were so desperate it was like like 4 to 6 weeks from test to academy. They were doing backgrounds while recruits attended the academy. They would be dismissed if they failed the background. A post back then said they were working something like a rotating 6/2 schedule with an automatic day of mandatory OT each week until they could get enough guys hired.

Edmizer, your information is wrong. Thats according to a freind that works there. He loves it, says the pay is good, retirement is good. As far as the wire comment, A reporter from the Baltimore Sun (Paul Simon), a newspaper in baltimore obviously, rode shotgun with a Baltimore Homocide unit for a year and wrote a book called Homocide: A year on the killing streets. And ultimatley a television show called Homicide: life on the street. One of the greatest cop shows I have ever seen. Anyway he went on to create the wire. Many of the eposodes of Homocide and the wire were based on the experiences of Simon's writing partner, a former Baltimore Homocide Detetive, (Ed Burns). A few of the actors on thew wire are retired Baltimore cops and the regular actors are from baltimore. It s a very good book, a highly recomended read. Many of the cass from both series are based on real cases.

"HOMOCIDE".. is that killing of gay's? I did't know that baltimore had such a large gay population and that the PD had a specific unit for it..

I suppose it beats HOMICIDE; the killing of your homies...

If your willing to make it to Montgomery County maybe your willing to make it a little further south into Northern Virginia such as Fairfax County, Prince William County, and/or Arlington County. I know of a few officers that work there in Baltimore and they all tell me you hit the streets running when you get out of the academy.

A little over a year ago when my friend was applying around down there, he applied to Baltimore PD, and they gave him the run around. Sounded like they couldnt get their hiring process working effectively. I've known this kid for 15 years, flawless background, Citadel graduate, ATF paid intern, etc. They jerked him around, and he got tired of it, and went to Montgomery County PD and was hired without incident. Shortly after, BPD came calling and wanted to make a contingent offer of employment. Obviously he said no, but he said that since he has been there, numerous BPD officers have tried to lateral into MCPD.

MDSP...

I was just down there visiting my friend when the Red Sox clinched the ALCS. We were at Bailey's pub in Germantown or Rockville, not sure which it is, but there were so many Boston transplants in the bar it was crazy. I was shooting the shit with a MDSP Trooper who was from Mass originally (not you was it?), and it was like a Boston reunion in this place. What a friendly group of people, you Maryland folks, my friend constantly tries to persuade me to move, but it falls on my wife's deaf ears.

My wife, before she was my wife, lived in Bethesda for her first job out of college (1987-1988 ). I always had a good time down there. Her brother was doing his MD residency in B-mo (that's what my fellow Marine from MD called it) at the same time. I can't say I ever had a bad time between MD and DC.

That said, B-mo is a shithole but would make for fun poilicing.

I lived in Prince George's County when I was stationed in DC (8th&I for those who know what that is). I made friends with alot of PG County cops. Good job, but very busy. 1 friend has been involved in 3 shootings over a 3 year period. This is going back a few years now though, may have changed. Lots of Marines on that job.

Posted by: mikemac64

8th and I, where they send the beautiful Marines!!! Was Gunny Saathoff (then SSgt) there with you?

Posted by: PBC FL Cop

I work with a few ex-Baltimore City cops and they would NOT recommend working there. Baltimore County PD would be a better choice if you want to live in that area of MD. Watch "The Wire", it's a very real look into Baltimore and the city's PD.

Yea I hear you can't drink if your on the force down there!

Posted by: futurecop87

Posted by: argy1155

Being a Police Constable in England, I wouldn't personally know about Baltimore. But if watching 'The Wire' (fantastic program by the way)! is anything to go by, you'll be v.busy!!

Posted by: badge14

Yea the drinking thing was a joke twords futurecop87 is a friend of mine and I was just trying to give him a hard time since he was asking everyone if that was true because he had heard that before he posted this.

Posted by: futurecop87
