LEOMINSTER -- A Fitchburg man is being held on $150,000 bail after police Friday afternoon arrested him on heroin-trafficking charges. Leominster Detective Joseph L. Siciliano said Friday evening that Juan Ortiz, 31, allegedly had more than 70 grams of heroin in his car. That amount of heroin has a street value of approximately $14,000, Siciliano said. Members of the North Worcester County Drug Task Force and the State Police Gang Unit learned of an expected drug delivery on Hamilton Street, Siciliano wrote in a report. The officers saw Ortiz, who reportedly has a suspended license, pull into a parking lot in a maroon Toyota Camry with tinted windows, and they approached him, Siciliano wrote. They asked Ortiz to get out of the car and had a police dog check the car for odors of illegal substances, and the dog reportedly "hit" on the car's center console. "Ortiz had a police scanner with various police frequencies in the car," he wrote. "Ortiz was cuffed and placed under arrest for operating a motor vehicle after suspension. A search of the console area was done and Task Force and Gang Unit members found an electronic hide that contained over 70 grams of heroin, $643 cash and packaging material." Ortiz allegedly said at the booking desk in the Leominster Police station he had heroin in the car, according to Siciliano's report. Sgt. Mark Amico said Ortiz should be arraigned Monday in Leominster District Court. He is charged with trafficking in heroin, possession of a class A substance (heroin) with intent to distribute-second or subsequent offense, and operating a motor vehicle after suspension.
