Truck thief caught; truck owner fined
By Mike Stucka

SALEM - Police said a truck thief was only on the run for about 10 minutes before being caught, but a police car was slightly damaged when they hauled the suspect out of the truck. The owner of the truck also faces a charge after leaving the keys in the truck, still running, with the doors unlocked.
A Beverly man went to the Salem police station Thursday to say his Ford F-150 had been stolen some time since 8:45 p.m. after he'd left it running on Lafayette Street. Dispatchers announced the theft over the radio, and officers soon spotted the truck on Loring Avenue headed toward Lynn.
Police officers from Salem, Lynn and Swampscott worked together to box the vehicle in and stop it. According to Salem police logs, the driver, Thomas Simpson Jr., 24, refused to get out of the truck and had to be removed.
The truck was still in gear and rolled into a Salem police cruiser, hitting it in the right rear and causing minor damage to both cars.
Simpson, of 69 North Common St., Lynn, was arrested and charged with larceny under $250, driving with a revoked license and larceny of a motor vehicle. Police filed the smaller theft charge after saying he had stolen $80 from the truck.
The owner of the truck was cited for failing to remove the keys from the ignition while a vehicle was unattended.
According to the Salem police logs, the alleged thief was quickly caught. The logs report the robbery happened around 9:15 p.m., the owner told police at 9:24 p.m., the truck was spotted at 9:25 p.m., and Simpson was under arrest in a Salem police car by 9:50 p.m.
