BEVERLY - A Charlestown man nabbed in Gloucester on warrants out of Boston now stands accused of committing five armed robberies in Salem and Beverly the past month. Police say Federico Arroyo, 25, used a similar, brazen method in the robberies, wielding a knife to threaten store clerks to get money and sometimes cigarettes. In some robberies, police said Arroyo would put the knife to the clerk's throat. Beverly police charged Arroyo with three of the four armed robberies he was initially suspected of, including the One Stop Market on Cabot Street on Dec. 29, Tedeschi Food Shop on Cabot Street on Dec. 25 and the Shell gas station on Brimbal Avenue on Dec. 28, said John McCarthy, police spokesman. Arroyo has not been charged with the Lakeview Motor Lodge on Dodge Street. Salem police are charging Arroyo with two armed robberies in their city: the Quickmart on Jefferson Avenue on Dec. 23 and Walyos Variety on Essex Street on Jan. 2. Police in Gloucester first arrested Arroyo on warrants unrelated to the robberies; Boston police wanted him for complaints of trespassing and burning property. Arroyo was arrested at his girlfriend's mother's home on Maplewood Avenue after a tip that Arroyo could be found there. Salem Detective Sgt. Stephen Bona said Arroyo put a knife to the neck of a clerk at Walyos, demanding he take the cash out of the register. Bona said the clerk was able to pick Arroyo out of an array of photos. In each of the robberies, Arroyo is charged with armed robbery. He is also charged with assault or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
