Tiverton - A domestic dispute Thursday resulted in a 47-year-old woman being stabbed in the neck and being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police said they arrested William A. Pelletier, 64, of 173 Handcock St., located off Stafford Road at the city line, and charged him with domestic assault with a dangerous weapon, a folding pocket knife.
He was being held without bail after being arraigned Friday in Newport District Court.
The woman was not being identified, except that she is the girlfriend of Pelletier’s brother and they all live together at the residence, Deputy Chief Nicholas A. Maltais said.
He said the incident was reported at 4:38 p.m. through an emergency call to police, saying a woman had been stabbed in the neck.
When authorities responded, the stab wound was evident, and she was “visibly upset and crying,” Maltais said.
She told police Pelletier came out of his bedroom with the folding knife and stabbed her during a verbal argument. Her boyfriend, whose identity was not available, was not home during the incident, reports said.
Two responding officers captured Pelletier without incident on a tip after he fled the home in a vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident on Hurst Lane, which is on the next street from where he lives, Maltais said.
He said town police also recovered the knife in the Harbor Mall parking lot in Fall River after Pelletier told them where he discarded it.
The woman was taken by ambulance to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and was later transported to the Providence trauma center.
“It was not life-threatening,” Maltais said. “But it narrowly missed her jugular vein.”
