City and state police officers are hunting for thugs who left a note threatening to assassinate a guard at the South Bay House of Correction in retaliation for a prisoner’s death New Year’s Eve.
Police have sequestered the guard in a safe house, according to multiple sources, as investigators track down the would-be hit men, a trail that may lead to Brockton.
“The Boston Police are working cooperatively with the Brockton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police investigating threats made against a corrections officer,” police said in a statement.
Officers were made aware of the threat after being notified of a note containing threats which was received by a corrections officer earlier this week.”
Police did not specify when they received the threatening note.
A spokesman for the SuffolkSheriff’s Office declined to comment and referred a reporter to the Boston police statement.
Wednesday night, Boston cops donned heavy armor, cradled assault rifles and fanned out around the South Bay jail, giving it the look of an besieged fortress.
BPD cruisers sat on each street corner that led to the secluded building on the lookout for suspicious cars driving to the jail.
The stakeout was eventually lifted, but investigators remained vigilant the rest of the week.
The family of the dead prisoner, Darryl Leslie, 41, have said they thought his death was suspicious, since it happened just days before he was set to be released.
Jail officials said Leslie had threatened a member of the jail staff and was being moved from minimum to maximum security shortly after 9 p.m. New Year’s Eve when the 6 feet, 6 inches and 250-pound prisoner became disruptive and fell unconcious, authorities said at the time.
Boston police homicide detectives are investigating the death, however jail officials said no excessive force was used on Leslie.
