Ear piece

Give me your input on some good ear pieces. The one the Dept. issued broke the first day.

Most of them seem to be of semi-disposable quality. Some work better than others, but I have yet to see a "quality" earpiece.

I have had two from this company and I am VERY pleased with them......... expensive but DEFINATELY worth the money..........

Can't think of the brand name at the moment, but I have the one that is sold in the Galls catalog. I don't use it anymore. I found that with either size earpiece that came with the kit, I just couldn't get it to sit right.

The US Secret Service uses a small Wisconsin company called Audio Implements. Nothing fancy, just a basic two cord "Surveillance Kit" to keep radio transmissions private.

Not sure what your looking for exactly..

I had a supervisor recommend them because of the custom mold.

I tried two or three of the $80.00 dollar range models. The ear piece with collar mic set up work well but didn't last. The ear bud was a complete waste of money. It was impossible to keep in your ear and sounded like you were talking into a pillow. I got the Motorola Comm-port three years ago. Other than replacing the ear piece tube twice ( it comes with three extra ) it has worked extremely well. I suggest getting the extra push to talk button on the middle. If you run with only the ptt on the radio, it makes it tough to hold the flashlight underyour arm, while reading ID's and transmitting without tying up strong hand. I have the middle piece attached to my vest and put button holes in my uniform shirts for the wire out to the radio.

Commport

I've worn this for every shift for 3 yrs now with no real problems...

We have Motorola HT1250 the worst radio I ever had. I wore an ear piece for a year and was impressed with the privateness it had. However it busted, and it was not very comfortable as the ear piece was not very ergonomical to my ears. Although the reception was better with it and feedback from other radios was almost non existent....two pluses

The one I have plugs into the jack in my speaker mike and is made by Otto. It works great. They make a wide varity of radio excessories. I purchased it through WORAD in Worcester. http://www.ottoexcellence.com/index1.html

Try looking at ixradio.com. They have inexpensive but quality earpieces. I have had one for about 3 years and it still works great as it did the first time I used it. Another option for a bit more money would be an Otto Surveillance earpiece kit. For a more comfortable fit in the ear, also get the silicone ear mold rather than the standard rubber mold it comes with.

department issue????

You mean they dont just give you the radio and you have to buy the friggin radio older and anything else?

Posted by: CapeCop07

I have no clue what you're trying to say, but some things you have to buy on your own when you become a police officer. That is why they give you a uniform allowance every year. They issue you a radio, but yes, the earpiece is not that expensive to purchase on your own.

Actually smarty pants I DO get the radio and holder just given to me. Any thing and every thing within reason is issued to me but we do not get a clothing allowance. I even got another ear piece after the first one broke!!

I am willing to buy a piece of equipment if it is better or atleast more durable than the issue. Can you believe that???? Like...for real..I'm so sereal.

So you guys are all allowed to purchase ear pieces? We are not. One of our guys got approval to "test" one out...not sure which one he got, but he said it was crap. But to "test" it out he had to spend his own cash - and he got a lot of crap from everyone...

Personally, I'm fine with my collar mic - although the minute you jog 5 feet the damn thing falls off...maybe I should "test" an ear piece as well...probably not.

I can see you running around the mall with your earpiece, camo and facepaint! Go, go Captain America!

Go to qmuniforms.com and order their catalog. It is free. Under their Communications/Radio Accessories pages, there are a number of different compatible units to choose from at reasonable prices. You can then go to your nearest Hearing Aid shop or an ENTs office and they can make a molded earpiece for you. Get one made for each ear so you can change off.

How about those leather clips that attach to one of the buttons on your shirt?

Keeps the mic at chest level.

Never seen those either...we don't use anything at all...just clip it to our lapel.

Here is one, Kate:

I'm considering purchasing one. I've heard they work well and at $5.00; if it sucks, it's not the end of the world.

Because of the way it sits across your chest, keying the mic and speaking doesn't require much movement.

Never had it fall off either.

I don't like the idea of turning your head to talk to a mic on your shoulder.

Oh ok Andy...I get it now. Honestly, I don't know if I would like that...I am just so used to the way I have it now. Tell me how it works!

Another vote for Otto. I never wore an earbud on the job, but I used one of Otto's low-profile earpiece and hidden microphone setups when I worked as a store detective. High marks for good audio clarity and transmission.

Yea, so, you have no clue because I was responding to the original topic, where he wrote

In addition, some departments don't issue a clothing allowance the first year, you get what they give you then after that, items are replaced on the allowance...

And for my actual input this time, I bought one that I had used at another job which worked well in a suit but not in uniform (though I didn't know at the time). It has 3 PTT's which sucks cause every time I move I key up. It has one on the connection point, another that would clip to a tie, and the other runs up a sleeve. I think the next thing is a listen only and/or a 1 PTT.

I have a nylon one that I used, if you got a nylon belt I'll send it up. I don't use it anymore.
