FALL RIVER -- A man charged with robbing a Tewksbury bank in September was arrested last week on charges that he tried to rob the Fall River Municipal Credit Union in this southeastern Massachusetts city.
At the time, Lowell police had obtained an arrest warrant for Gary Record, 43, in connection with an unarmed robbery Dec. 18 at Bank of America, 199 Plain St.
Record, whose last known address was 74 Fulton St., Fall River, was arrested on Jan. 7 by Fall River police. Police said he is a suspect in the past robbery of the Citizen-Union Bank in Fall River.
Fall River police had extremely high-quality surveillance camera photographs of the credit-union heist, including one that apparently shows Record grabbing a wad of cash.
Police went to 220 Wade St., one of Record's previous addresses, where they found him hiding in a closet.
Police say Record is also wanted in connection with several robberies in Fall River at a Walgreens, a Tedeschi's Market and a 7-Eleven convenience store. Record was arrested after police say he took a taxi to rob the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank in Stadium Plaza in Tewksbury. After making off with the cash, Record had the cab driver drop him off near the motel where he was staying.
When Tewksbury police watched the bank surveillance tape, they saw Record inside the bank, then leave with an undisclosed amount of cash and get into a yellow cab. Police tracked down the cab driver, who indicated that the fare was dropped off near Motel 6 on Main Street.
When police knocked on Record's motel door, he reportedly flushed much of the cash down the toilet. Police were able to recover most of the money. Record was arraigned in Lowell Superior Court on a charge of unarmed robbery. Court records indicate he was released Dec. 21 after $2,500 cash bail was posted on his behalf.
