LOUDON, N.H. -- The biggest racetrack deal in NASCAR history was finalized Friday when New Hampshire International Speedway officially became New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Speedway Motorsports paid $340 million to buy the Loudon track, the most ever paid. The new owners said they believe it's worth every penny.
"It's got great assets," said new General Manager Jerry Gappens. "NASCAR Sprint Cup dates are a rare asset. There's only a certain number of those tracks that host NASCAR Sprint Cup races."
When Bob Bahre owned the speedway, two NASCAR races were held each year, pumping tens of millions of dollars into the local economy. The races have sold out 26 consecutive times, but there has been speculation whether one or both could be moved to another track owned by Speedway Motorsports.
The new owners said the races will continue for now.
"There's been speculation that (Speedway Motorsports chairman O. Bruton Smith) wants a second date in Las Vegas, and the speculation has been that that would come from one of these two dates," Gappens said. "That's not his plan, at least not at this point."
There will be some changes, such as the name, and new signs will be posted as soon as next week. The new owners are also exploring options for adding more seats. The facility currently holds 92,000.
Bahre will stay on with the track as a consultant.
